Democrats won the 2018 midterm elections by 10 million votes, the largest margin in history.
And it was mostly because of women voters turning out to send a message to the GOP. According to Pew, nearly 60% of women voted for Democrats and just 40% voted for Republicans. (https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/11/08/the-2018-midterm-vote-divisions-by-race-gender-education/)
Now, thanks to the anti-women actions being taken by Republicans at all levels of government, women are more angry than ever.
With new state laws making abortion illegal, the GOP has further awakened and angered the sleeping giant known as the female electorate. (53% of all votes cast are cast by women.)
This means that 2020 will probably be a Blue Tsunami unlike anything we've ever seen.
It will be helped by the ongoing hearings and investigations in the House which will let the American public know that Trump is indeed both a traitor and a criminal.
The best thing that could happen for Democrats is for Republicans in various states to continue to pass stupid anti-women laws. They'll all be thrown out in court anyway, but in the meantime they will serve the great purpose of activating and motivating tens of millions of women voters.
Maybe 2020 will be the year that a woman is elected as president after all.

(23,222 posts)...who actually have to live under those laws. We cannot automatically guarantee that they will be immediately repealed upon a Democratic Party electoral victory. If will take time, and the repukes will fight like mad banshees to stop us. We have got to fight those laws NOW, and if we fail now, we will win in November 2020 and take up the fight again with a stronger army.

(12,533 posts)And i have my doubts that the SCOTUS will even take these laws. Which would leave lower court rulings stopping them in effect. We'll see

(6,537 posts)The Trump administration has been filling judicial vacancies in rapid succession, with the majority of nominees having one thing in common: ties to the Federalist Society.
snip
Of the 13 judicial nominees confirmed since President Trump took office, 10 are either current or former Federalist Society members or regular speakers at its events. Eight of the 10 appellate Trump nominees pending before the Senate have ties to the group.

I would say I think the Federalist Society has come to play over the last 30 years for Republican presidents something of the role the American Bar Association has traditionally played for Democratic presidents, Calabresi said in an interview with The Hill.
The last two Republican presidents have disregarded ABA ratings, and I think they are relying on the Federalist Society to come up with qualified nominees.

(7,431 posts)I don't understand, except that the males who are not voting against Trumpy are in massive denial that THEY are also effected by anti-women legislation, and not in a good way. The "battle of the sexes" nonsense is a relic of the past. Equality for all is here and now. Males have to understand that when females are targeted for discrimination and as a class of people inferior to males, we all lose. Hopefully, women will take the reigns of power, persist, and prevail. It's for the good of ALL of us.

(10,163 posts)They are treating my most beloved friends and family like objects to be used and then thrown away to suffer the repercussions of the religiously insane, anti-science 1800's laws. My daughters and granddaughters are not their things and not their religion. My daughters are thinking, breathing capable adults that don't need regressive white males to tell them what to do with their bodies.
But here is the thing, there is an abortion pill. No matter what these f*cking assholes think, my daughters and granddaughters will have access to safe abortions whenever they want because they can NOT stop all those pills from getting into the country. The pills are pretty safe if taken carefully and everyday science is making advances in their safety and simplicity of use. Science has advanced too far to stop women from taking control of their reproduction. There are countries that sell the abortion pill over the counter. Now fat white rich males, try and stop them from crossing the border.

(1,519 posts)I have two daughters and a wife and they HATE Trump. They made sure they voted. They will vote again. Now take that seething hatred and apply it to women all over the country that have been further enraged by these stupid, draconian abortion laws rammed through legislatures where there are super majorities gained by extreme gerrymandering.
Republican policies are extremely unpopular. They are desperate to jam these things through while they have the power. They know their time is short.
I live in Texas and even here these twisted, ignorant zealots (almost all male) are beginning to lose their grip. These old men (and women) will soon die off.
We need to all redouble our efforts. These idiots will continue to try and enshrine their awful ideas into law.

(37,648 posts)the rust belt, some southern agricultural states. Farm closures have reached a decades-long high. People usually vote their pocketbook, IMO.
But WOMEN will be spurred on by the anti-abortion bills that have passed...the states just went berzerko way too far. They could've gotten away with a couple of mild restrictions, maybe...but effectively banning all abortions, even in the case of rape or incest, is going to get the ire of women up.
Since those states are Republican, anyway, I don't know that the abortion issue will give the Democratic candidate a win in those states. We'll see.

(9,322 posts)Ive been close to the farm community my whole life and its really hard to picture that community voting Democrat in any kind of numbers. Granted they are unhappy with Trump but its just a reflex Democrats are weirdos that want to take away your money, kill babies, and take away your freedom. Do you see any hope for this situation? Have you noticed the tide turning?
Farmer-Rick
(10,163 posts)They don't seem to be turning Democratic no matter how much money RepubliCONS cause them to lose. These are usually chemical farmers who use Roundup, every pesticide, fungicide, and antibiotic they can get their hands on. It's all about getting every bit of production off their land no matter what.
But the smaller farmers who are moving into real organics and antibiotic free, pasture raised uncaged animals are on a smaller margin and can't afford to have RepubliCONS routinely destroy their markets. They are turning to the democratic party. A small farmer co-op tried to meet with their RepubliCON Congress critters but got put off. They are about 100 small farms. They probably won't ever vote RepubliCON again, they are so angry.
I actually had an old farmer tell me he liked what Bernie had to say. So, I think Dems could get a foothold in this area at least among the smaller farmers. The real problem here is that the precincts and voting districts are so gerrymandered that the religiously insane kind of overwhelm the small farmer vote. My district is a snake along the border. It really does look like a salamander.

(642 posts)I'm from small town Iowa, very rural area. I've seen the Democratic Party have ups and downs in rural areas over the past 50 years. My mother was State Vice-chair of the Iowa Democratic Party in the 60's, and on Dem. National Committee in the 70's, so I've seen everything from inside.
I've seen the pendulum swing back and forth. Iowa has elected Dem. senators and governors, and what needs to happen is that the rural Republicans need to stay home in larger numbers. Many will not vote for Democrats, but if they stay home that is the same thing since the Republican candidates won't get their votes.
It's worthwhile to note that Iowa now has 3 Democrats out of 4 members of Congress. (Two GOP seats went Blue in 2018.)
If Democrats can get some rural votes it will help them win because they already have the city votes. They don't need to win the majority of rural votes, just enough to carry the district (or the state).
As former Dem. Iowa governor Tom Vilsack said, it's important that Democrats try to compete hard in rural areas, because they can pick up enough votes there to win elections. What happened under Obama was that Democrats gave up on competing in rural areas and now the GOP controls 2/3 of state legislatures. This has to change.

But once again, itll all come down to those same swing states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, Florida, Wisconsin and maybe New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia.
And all of this presupposes that the 2016 election will be free and fair something the Republican Party will not even address, even though it was recently reported that Russians actually hacked into voter rolls in two Florida counties.

(3,479 posts)Not only is that close to Gump's 62.9 million haul in 2016, and it's more than the number of votes John Kerry got in 2004. Again, it was a MID-TERM. I don't think enough people appreciate how impressive this number is.
I get that a lot of us are still traumatized by what happened in 2016, but make no mistake: NOTHING - not Putin, not the media, not the electoral college, not the Jill Steins of the world - can prevent Gump's defeat if we show up to vote. I believe we will. The apathy that ruined us in 2010, 2014, and 2016 is long gone.
