What do liberal people here now think about Susan G. Komen Foundation?

Most of us here on DU are aware of the Planned Parenthood controversy.

Has the organization redeemed itself in any way since?

I ask because at the drugstore, the cashier asked me if I wanted to donate a $1 to the foundation, and I rather tersely declined, something like, "No, I am not going to give to that organization!" I didn't go all into why I felt that way; of course, he'd have no way of knowing why I was so abrupt with him; at the same time, he didn't bother to ask me. Then I thought, wait, what if they reversed course?

Anyway, just interested in opinions, thanks. Was I too hasty?

Last I heard, Nancy is still collecting a paycheck even though she has had to step down from the CEO job. They have had a big shake up with lots of changes, but it remains to be seen whether they have made good changes. I wouldn't throw any money their way or feel any guilt about it. They blew it big time. There are plenty of other groups doing more, better work than them.

I saw an Ozarka (i think) water bottle truck a couple of weeks ago, and it was all pink and promoting Komen on the side of the truck. It really rubbed me the wrong way. It was the first Komen promo I have seen since their PP fiasco. I don't much care for Ozarka either, so it was a double whammy.

If we are not happy with the political agenda set by some at Susan G. Komen Foundation, then there are lots of smaller fund-raising organizations out there that could probably use a helping hand. There is no reason why we have to give to an organization simply because it is big. Big organizations may be able to donate more to research but often they also become so big that they become corrupt as in the case of Susan G. Komen Foundation.

They exposed themselves to be a right wing organization, and they don't give nearly enough to charity - instead, they all profit handsomely from the goodwill of other people.

Political thinking and lock-step agreement are more important than fighting cancer.

They are in business to enrich a few and only two thirds of the money collected trickles down to the needy. I was watching a special about Haiti after the earthquake. It seems a majority the NGOs there have people staying in fancy hotels and socializing with each other and now and then they go to the refugee camps to provide a few and inadequate aid and services. I know there are good agencies out there, but by and far most charities don't measure up.

I would rather give a homeless person a $10 or $20 bill directly than give it to an agency that will use a third that money for administrative costs.

My problem is they have become an arm of the cancer research support organization that doesn't want to find a cure, they only want to assure a revenue stream for the continued existence of the industry. They put a man on the moon in a decade for less than 1/10th of what has gone toward cancer research in three decades. That tells me they don't want a cure or a means of prevention, it's all about treatment and continuing the revenue flow.

I'm all for fighting cancer - The fact that SGK foundation sues and shuts down other small entities who seek to do good makes me furious. The salaries and payments made to those high up in the company which is supposed to be about helping people is something that I can't get past, and will not support in any way. I realize they aren't unique, but I do know that there are other organizations which do good and aren't cash cows for the administrators.

The issue over Planned Parenthood was bad enough, but the facts that it exposed about how little of what is given to actually goes to the cause, keeps me from ever supporting them again.
