Because his self-denial had been shattered. He is guilty of a cover-up and he has been called out for it.
Did he really think he could withhold documents, deny witnesses to Congress, deny Congress the right to have a different opinion of the Mueller Report than he or his AG, Bill Barr, and show outright contempt for the first branch of government, and not be accused of a cover-up?
It's a problem he can easily fix. He can release the documents that the Congress is requesting and he can encourage his staff and former staff to cooperate with the Congress. He can decide to tell the truth and be trasparent, rather than acting like a spoiled child.
But he cannot tell the truth.
Because the truth would destroy him and his criminal empire, that he has built on lies and deceptions. Also, it could open him up to criminal penalties. But he hopes to convince his followers that all his criminal activities are the work of Democrats and the fake media, not his own doing.

(18,486 posts)I think he has a twisted, confused view of her. On one hand, she represents everything he disdains - I'm another things she's a woman who stands up for herself, is successful, and isn't the least bit intimidated or susceptible to control by him. But on the other, he's fascinated and really impressed by her and also afraid of her because she's the first woman he's encountered who has power over him (other than, perhaps, his mother - and that's a whole 'nother jungle of messed up pathology).

(15,805 posts)He's spent a lifetime curating his image as a fake tough guy. His base has been hooked on that phony persona, the rightwing media cultivates Trump's alter ego as a comic book superhero. If he gives in to a Democrat, a woman no less, after years of labeling Dems as weak, and tarring Pelosi as a villainous loser, his ignorant base will turn on him.
Trump knows he's painted himself into a corner with no escape... Unless he can run up a convenient war with some country to create a diversionary tactic and take the pressure off his mounting piccadillos.

cover-up infers a real a crime in 99% of most peoples' subconscious minds (regardless if the mouth-breathers outwardly sputter anything it eats like a worm in some of their pea-brains)
draft-dodger (what Buttigieg just called him) equals a gutless coward
I really (unfortunately) think Rump is going to fire up a war with Iran within a year (max) to try and reclaim his caudillo mantle. The more crimes are exposed and the more fearful he is of getting roasted, the more likely that war becomes. He doesn't give a FUCK if several million die, in fact 2 million plus dead Muslims probably makes him and his brownshirt base's tiny todgers semi-rigid.

(9,670 posts)It's a beautiful way to frame the President's conduct since election day 2016, and ties nicely back to Watergate with all its implications. Americans seem to need a mnemonic device to categorize important ideas and concepts, and hence the Dems seem to agree that now is the time to launch this short but sweet and apt attack on Trump.
Actually, we've stolen a page from the GOP playbook. This is exactly what they would do - hell, what they've been doing - "no collusion", "no collusion", "no obstruction", "no obstruction". Those words stick in your craw.
So does COVER-UP. Big time.

(17,276 posts)He thinks just saying that he is something is enough. Doesn't have to actually be it.He's saying, I'll tell you who I am--don't pay any attention to your lying eyes.
And since when do normal people, even politicians, say so much so often about who and what they are?

(1,990 posts)Cover up is a much easier term for people to grasp. Collusion or conspiracy (although more legal) sounds so complicated and elitist. That term was not used by accident and Trump knows it. However, he is dumb enough to repeat it. Plus she is praying for him. Pelosi cracks me up.
