Most of the time the pet dies before the owner and they freeze the body to be buried with.

We would put the frozen bag at the foot of the casket right before burial.

There was one I had that the family of the deceased had her shih-tzu put down when she died. I was absolutely disgusted, but had to be professional with their wish.

Didn't you have the moral and legal right to deny their request?

Isn't it a personal decision?

The dog was already euthanized by the time we got it at the funeral home.

I never would have known if they didn't tell me.

I place the blame on the person who had the dog euthanized and the vet that provided the service on a healthy animal...

I suppose I could have said "this is wrong", but no good would have come from that.

There's alot to deal with in this profession...

There are no laws that prevent a funeral home from receiving a dead dog from a family to put in a casket.

It was disgusting to me, but honestly there was no going back to save the dog.

The family was grieving and my job is to help them through it as best as I can. Not all of the family members were happy about the dog though.

Editing to add that I don't think killing a pet in order to put them in a casket is right. There Should be a law against it, but that would ultimately be up to veterinarians to stop the practice.
