Trump on Thursday boasted that he will be the guest of honor at Japan's "biggest event" in "over 200 years" when he visits the country this weekend to meet with the prime minister and new emperor.
During an impromptu Q&A with reporters in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, Trump was asked whether he believes he can work out a trade deal with Japan in the near future. The president did not answer, but played up the historic nature of his state visit.
Its a very big thing going on with the emperor," Trump said. "Its something that hasnt happened in over 200 years. I am the guest, meaning the United States is the guest, but Prime Minister Abe said to me very specifically, 'You are the guest of honor. Theres only one guest of honor. You are the guest of honor.'"
"With all the countries of the world I am the guest of honor at the biggest event that theyve had in over 200 years," Trump said. "So its a great thing. And we get along very well with Japan. I get along very well with the prime minister so were going to be spending two days over there."

... the timing of his Japan trip couldn't be better for Abe.
An expected trade deal with China dramatically fell apart this month as Beijing appeared to push its luck with Trump, sparking an angry response and billions of dollars in extra tariffs. The rapidly expanding trade war is expected to hit US consumers hard, leaving many businesses -- including those typically supportive of Trump -- bewildered and angry.
"The President of the United States owes farmers like myself some type of plan of action," John Wesley Boyd Jr., a soybean farmer in Baskerville, Virginia, told CNN. "Farmers were his base. They helped elect this president ... and now he's turning his back on America's farmers when we need him the most."
Trump will look to Japan to offer some relief on trade, or at least an easy win. Last month, the two sides held the first round of negotiations towards a trade agreement. While Trump has spoken of a need to address the trade imbalance with Japan -- a $67.7 billion deficit in 2018 -- his advisers and both Republicans and Democrats have urged him to ease up on tariffs when it comes to allies and focus on China ...

I wonder how much consideration to-
- Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
- the beginning of the Showa Era when Hirohito was Emperor- 1926-1989.
- the Heisei Era when Akihito was Emperor
- the Meiji Restoration the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1868
- the arrival of Admiral Perry in 1853
Just for starters...
Of course he has never even heard of any of these events..

(5,914 posts)My dad said that it was a book that I HAD to read, because I wouldn't just read it, but I would actually live it. It was so engrossing in the milieu it describes, that reading it would almost become like living a second life to me.
I thought he was nuts. That book was as big as the Webster's dictionary, and it had long passages of dialogue written in phonetic Japanese in Italic font. The subject matter was historical English-Japanese stuff. Who cares? I couldn't think of anything more boring or horrible.
But I started reading it anyway. I would just give it a couple of chapters, then tell my dad that I was too busy with the summer job to read any more.
But my dad was absolutely right. I was hooked from the end of the first chapter. One of my fondest memories of that summer was reading that book. It sits alongside The Lord of the Rings and Le Morte d'Arthur as one of the greatest epics I've ever read from start to finish.

(43,371 posts)WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump has said Japan should have shot down the North Korean missiles that flew over the country before landing in the Pacific Ocean earlier this year, diplomatic sources have said, despite the difficulties and potential ramifications of doing so.
The revelation came ahead of Trumps arrival in Japan on Sunday at the start of his five-nation trip to Asia. Threats from North Koreas nuclear weapons and missile development programs were set to be high on the agenda in his talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday.
Trump questioned Japans decision not to shoot down the missiles when he met or spoke by phone with leaders from Southeast Asian countries over recent months to discuss how to respond to the threats from North Korea, the sources said.
The U.S. president said he could not understand why a country of samurai warriors did not shoot down the missiles, the sources said.
