(11,736 posts)He said very clearly that it was not the job of the Department of Justice to indict the president. It is the oversight responsibility of specifically the House, but also the Senate. The House needs to continue investigations, get access to the unredacted report, then to the underlying evidence that informed the report. They need to question investigators and expose all of the dirt that Trump actually did. As the public hears more and more, the pressure will be on the Senate to do their job and if they don't they will pay a price.
LiberalFighter
(50,912 posts)to investigate and charge crimes then what is the point of the Justice Department?
Caliman73
(11,736 posts)He said that it wasn't possible to do so against a sitting president. He clearly stated that if there was nothing there he would have said so. He was bound by the policy which is presumably supported by the Constitution, to not make recommendations but to lay out the information to Congress, who takes the information and decides to impeach or let things go.
This is exactly what happened during Watergate. The AGs wrote the report and gave it to Congress. Then you have the asshole Ken Starr who did not follow due process and released the report to the public for clearly political reasons and dishonored the office of the Special Counsel.

Didn't think I needed to provide a citation. But since you appear to need it, here:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/03/24/us/politics/barr-letter-mueller-report.html
It says:
--Russia interferred in election,
--Mueller could not indict trump because of policy,
--Mueller's investigation could not "exonerate trump" on Obstruction.
All of that is in Barr's letter from March 24, 2019. That letter did not spur Congress to act, why do you think Muellers BS today will?

I don't think Mueller moved the marker farther than where it is today. IF he had added more information about the unredacted parts of the report, that might have helped. But, he didn't.
I'm not trying to stop impeachment. Quite the opposite. I'm frustrated.
Sunsky
(1,737 posts)Nancy Pelosi isn't always right. IMO she is wrong with not calling for impeachment hearings immediately after the redacted Mueller report was released. We don't need beyond a reasonable doubt to have hearings. Some of us are tired of the excuses. Most of the people I speak with, believe that the Democrats are powerless against Trump. We have to change that perception.
