Pelosi swats away impeachment -- again

Axios

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, brushing off new comments by Robert Mueller and 2020 Democratic hopefuls, feels as strongly as ever that impeaching President Trump would be a "fool’s errand," a top ally told Axios.

Why it matters: Pelosi remains defiant, despite growing calls from fellow Democrats to plunge quickly into impeachment.

Ironically, Pelosi is leading the charge against impeachment while GOP Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan is leading the charge for it.

By the numbers: Politico says the whip count in favor of impeachment is 41 House members (42 if you include Amash), representing "fewer than 20% of House Democrats, and less than 10% of the House."

1. Endless hearings

Just like the Republicans do. Make Repbulicans testify, get the documents, follow the money. Every day the news about Trump is worse, and Russian links to others will also emerge in the financial inquiries. Pelosi knows how to deal with him. If he can't hide from the law while in office, he'll quit.

his strategy even isn't to win in the courts. Trump's strategy is to delay all of the court cases until the election.

Pretty hard to investigate with no documents and no witnesses.

Democrats need to ask themselves this question; will it be easier for our committees to get documents and witnesses to testify if requests are made from an impeachment inquiry or from a regular hearing? Will the courts expedite requests for documents and enforce subpoenas under an impeachment inquiry?

Time is growing shorter. Debates start in a couple of weeks. Primary elections start in February. Steve Kornacki will dominate the air waves. What Mueller report?

Speaking at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco after Mueller's statement, Pelosi said the House Democratic chairs will continue to investigate and added: "Nothing is off the table."

Politico “Between the lines”. Whatever it takes to get the clicks.

I never understood that about Nancy. Imagine having to explain that your biggest power isn't off the table. Why would it ever be?

we can do it

Pelosi to start the Impeachment process, before she agrees. In the meantime, keep pushing the court cases through the system, and get the full unredacted Mueller Report out there, along with court enforced compelled witness testimony. #deathby1000cuts

since Trump outlawed subpoenas? We may get some information from his accounting firm, but that is not a given. I honestly think that Trump may be successful in tying everything up in the courts until after the election, by then it will be too late.

will do exactly the same stonewalling during an Impeachment Inquiry, and then Democrats will risk looking like they've gone all "Benghazi". There's time, and the quick judicial decisions of last week give us some hope that the House can get hold of his tax returns, for example.

At the moment, we don't have his

tax returns
Trump witnesses
the unredacted Mueller Report

At least let's get some of this before proceeding (I'm not against an Impeachment Inquiry).
