(2,187 posts)She's an ass and a traitor to her gender. I'll never forgive her for voting for Kavanaugh.

(28,815 posts)thought the world of Collins. She saw her as being pro choice and for women. I tried to tell her she's a republican. I think the same friend was on Kavanaugh's side too. or maybe she's seen the light by now.
This woman is vehemently pro choice. It's an issue that really matters to her. I cannot fathom her opinion of Collins and will ask if it's still the same now. Or not, because I value her friendship so much...

(82,849 posts)We're in uncharted territory, as I'm sure most of you political junkies that post here know. Collins' numbers are down, and that's good. In other parts of the country, Republican incumbents' numbers are still up, and that's bad. But the approval numbers can move several points in either direction because of events or even for no reason at all.
When someone like Collins is going through a rough patch, I hope all Mainers of good heart make sure things stay as rough as possible for her. The nature of incumbency is that if nothing bad keeps happening, Collins numbers might just start perking up again, simply because she hasn't had any bad publicity. In the same vein, keep hammering away on supposedly "safe" Republican candidates and incumbents. As we've seen over and over again in 2018 and into 2019, some of these unstable political isotopes are just a little nudge away from breaking down entirely. If Democrats are ready with a credible candidate, we can take big advantage of it.

(15,751 posts)However, in this messy world, at this point in time, 34% is trending in the right direction, imho.
Additionally, traitortrump is even more self-destructive, than we can plausibly hope for in a 'con. We are very fortunate there.
A lingering fear of mine, is that this favorable trend of information, court orders, and relentless trump self-destructiveness; will be hindered by Dem drives to overwhelm this favorable trend - and go to a hasty, fast as possible, House 'impeachment' . . . and trump optimum Senate preservation of trump prospects.

And Collins is certainly no Margret Chase Smith!

(6,699 posts)...provided Maine Democrats put up a quality candidate. That is IMPERATIVE!!! That's how we got stuck with mr. turtlehead, rand paul, cotton the warhawk, the Mississippi clown, and half a dozen other weak losers. We DIDN'T have a strong opponent to knock them out.
We can win the Senate once the shit hits the fan and "sleepy America" wakes up and starts to pay attention to this nightmare we have been dealing with since b- actor ronnie began to dismantle one of the greatest nations in the world...all for the sake of giving the rich and corporations huge windfalls in the tax code. Enough is enough!

(36,985 posts)Susan Collins was a 'right time, right place' candidate...
She was in a three person primary race and so far back she could not even see the other two candidates' tail lights.
The millionaire candidate sponsored an investigation of the evangelist candidate who got run out of a southern state because he was boinking his twelve year old babysitter.
The millionaire denied his involvement but the public turned against both him and the evangelist, leaving Susan Collins as the sole remaining candidate.

(855 posts)I think she was, and that was her only 'qualification' for the job as I recall. I don't think Collins had any previous experience in any elected position. Collins has always played the 'moderate' in this state and gotten away with it because too many people only pay attention during election cycles, much like pubbie candidates everywhere else. My own, otherwise dem, sister has supported her through the years because, to paraphrase, "she's a woman" - a wall I could never penetrate to make her see Collins' actual voting record. If Collins is losing ground in this state, all I can say is, about bloody time - enough of her games of being a 'moderate'. She's anything but.

Probably has most of what the OP posted, but the comments are also good. And no, I'm not a shill for Kos's site, far from it.
Two nuggets: the pollster says that the Kavanaugh vote is probably the biggest reason for her approval freefall, and the other Senator, Angus King, an independent who caucuses and votes reliably with Democrats, is at 57% approval in the same poll.
I am also reminded that Sara Gideon, the speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, is the likely eventual Democratic candidate. I just did a shallow dive into her background. She seems like a terrific candidate to win this.

(31,261 posts)A lot of people are sweating Maine democrats not having "The" candidate. Gideon singlehandedly stood up to and blocked LePage and set the stage for the massive success by Maine democratic candidates in 2018.
DarthDem
(5,257 posts)I didn't know that about Ms. Gideon. Thanks. Yeah, after I did just the surface research into that I mentioned I didn't get why there was angst about not having an opponent for the esteemed Sen. Collins yet, because Ms. Gideon seems like a fabulous candidate.
llmart
(15,561 posts)That is very encouraging. If Sara Gideon is dynamic, we have a good chance of tossing Collins to the curb never to be heard from again. If for no other reason, her vote on Kavanaugh means she deserves to lose.

(5,257 posts)I'm a CA resident myself and certainly no Maine expert, but one of the best parts of Kos's site - in fact, the best part - is the commenters from different parts of the country providing their perspective. Of course it's much the same on DU.
Also, you're absolutely right. Sen. Collins' vote on the Honorable Justice Cavanaugh exemplifies perfectly her total cowardice and hypocrisy in the face of any decision that requires her to go against her "party." She must go.
