I lived through Katrina. I don't know why, but I'm scared to death.
Please keep us in your thoughts and wish us well. I am hoping against hope that we get hit with a minor hurricane.

(28,859 posts)A hurricane is quite an ordeal.
I always evacuated no matter what
the strength or forecast. But a lot
of people stay and try to ride it out.
I hope everyone in Isaac's path comes
safe and sound.
Good luck y'all!

(108,977 posts)After living in Katrina aftermath conditions, I had PTSD. Please feel free to mock me, if it makes you feel better. And I am being completely honest. Mocking pain is a good hobby for some.

(39,961 posts)I deeply considered before posting this. You and I have had a contentious post back and forth in the last few days.
I am sitting here, I have a hurricane on my doorstep and you make a joke about the fact that I have PTSD due to the experiences I had during Katrina.
If you endured one milisecond of Katrina, you would likely be weeping in my arms. Do you know why? Because no matter what vile thing you throw at me, I am still a compassionate human being, and KNOW what it was like to go through it. I would help you. I am not vindictive, or angry against others.
I speak up, but I don't do vengeance, but I do believe in teaching moments. My house might get blown away, but I took the opportunity to let you know, PNWMOM, that I do care about you, but I have feelings, as well. Please do not taunt a hurricane Katrina survivor when there is a hurricane headed for her house.

(4,507 posts)pnwmom, I think you really need to clarify what you meant there.
I think she had to be sincere here, I've got to say.
I can't imagine anyone would mock someone over having very real PTSD from Katrina.
Please wait for her to clarify.
Having Katrina PTSD sounds like the most natural thing in the world to me. You lived through an apocalypse.
Praying this one is not nearly as bad.

(108,977 posts)Whatever we have disagreed about lately (I have no idea), it has nothing to do with Katrina. I would think anyone who went through that would be traumatized.
The reason that I said PTSD with a question mark is that because, in your OP, you said you didn't know why you were scared. So I suggested it could be PTSD, in case you hadn't thought about it before. Of course your trauma is real. I never suggested otherwise.
I'm sorry that happened to you and to all the others there then. I'm sure there ARE many victims of PTSD.

(16,199 posts)As long as the wind speed isn't over the structural rating for your dwelling, usually 130 MPH, and you aren't in a flood zone, why leave?

(39,961 posts)I went through Katrina, clean up and everything. I could bail, but this is my home.
Am I totally wrong for giving a shit about where I live? I debated leaving during Katrina. I was on the "stay" side. For one reason - once we left, we wouldn't get back in, and damn, this is my home. This is where I make my livelihood. I LIVE here.
You pick a place that isn't full of problems like snowstorms, earthquakes, or tornadoes.
I didn't pick living here, but there are people here that I love to death, and you can see that I really mean that - I love them enough to risk death.
You should be so lucky in your white tower enclave.
(forgive me for the harsh response, but I am so tired of the "why do you live there" people)

I literally don't understand. That's why I asked the question. There was no judgment or advocacy either way. It was just a question.

Welcome to DU. I also lived in Houston for a while. They have some epic traffic, rain, and nightclubs

(25,415 posts)Connecticut dealt with Hurricane Irene last year but it was nothing compared to what the south has had in terms of hurricanes over the years. My brother lost power for a week and had to chainsaw his way out as he lived in the woods along a lake. Tons of trees were down. The storm even knocked out the transformer at the end of the road. Hopefully you won't have to deal with anything like that. Good luck and stay strong.

(39,961 posts)We had to chainsaw our way out just to be able to WALK, let alone drive. Been there, done that, survived it.
Thank you for the kind thoughts. I wish I lived in the Northeast where people are more liberal, and there isn't a hurricane threatening to push into my window.

Our power went out about an hour ago, about 6:30.
We're on generator power now.
Not much rain. Wind, but not too bad yet.

(4,003 posts)But we are still in the dark. Power has been going off and on.
I hear that some areas in Slidell still have power. I am past Northshore Mall, near LaCombe.
If you need to get a message out, PM me. I will be happy to relay.

(16,199 posts)4 hurricanes at the VA/NC border about 15 feet above sea level (but inland a few miles) and one here in Connecticut. As long as you are not in a flood zone you will likely be fine. 80 MPH winds sound awful, but almost all fixed structures will stay intact.

(28,158 posts)CAT 1, 80mph winds last I saw. Which sounds scary to me, since I've never been through more than 60 mph winds where I live. However, my extended family there says its not too bad.
Take care, be safe and check in. Ok?

(39,961 posts)157 mile winds in the eyewall, which passed over us. I've never endured anything like it, or the aftermath, and pray I never do again. The thing is, Katrina was fast, and then we could get over the literally horrid conditions we had. This one crouched over us for at least 24 hours with dripping fangs before going on and moving somewhere else.

(39,961 posts)Thank you for everyone's prayers. The worse we had was my spice garden got totaled and a chunk of the porch fell in. All in all? Wonderful compared to what could have happened. We were floating in rain and wind for days, but we made it all right and didn't lose water. Losing water was what made Katrina the most horrible.
