Even though Ann Romney was sick with MS, Mitt was willing to curl up in bed with her.
Ann Romney actually said this on the CNN hour-long Romney profile, as evidence of what a loving man he is.
She actually said that Mitt's warmth and goodness is so epic that in the early days after her MS diagnosis, "even though I was very sick he curled up in bed with me."
Never has anyone been so humanized.
This has been a theme of the humanization of Mitt... bragging about things that are baseline human decencies as evidence of extraordinary warmth and compassion. OMG, he arranged his finances in such a way that this children would have food to eat!

(9,612 posts)Why the hell wouldn't he? Did they think MS was contagious?
Her saying that this way leads me to believe that he normally wouldn't curl up in bed with her.

(14,180 posts)software? I heard that patch included some lines of code about 'normal human decency,' but I've never been able to verify with my own robot who keeps saying the same line over and over again: "I can't do that, Dave."

(1,933 posts)Just the thought of anyone "curling up" with her makes me nauseous.
just to clarify - I did NOT mean because of her illness. She looks colder than him. That's what I meant.

We're both voting Democrat though. Mitt doesn't get human points from MY husband. In fact my husband thinks Mitt is an no-good asshole. Of course my husband also thinks Republicanism is a disease.

(29,503 posts)The reason this sounds awkward is because it IS awkward for her to pander, given that she is accustomed to armies of paid domestic servants and car elevators, estates and mansions located all over the world, offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, etc.
Rich people like her don't know HOW to pander; they demand! They bark! Pandering is so Little People, and she's used to doing stuff in order to put a greater distance between herself and THEM.

(1 post)That is a very nice story. However something is bothering me about how Mitt Romney is dealing with his wife's illness.
He didn't made the tough choice. He seems to ignore the fact that stress can have an extremely negative effect on MS, yet he has been running for the most stressful job in the world for about six years.
Campaigning alone is very stressful, has he thought about how being first lady will effect her? It doesn't appear so.
No one has ever asked him this that I know of.
Getting into bed with your wife is easy, deciding not to run for president for the sake of your wife's health; not so much so.
So much for epic goodness.

(24,412 posts)Isn't what any normal person would do with their spouse, particularly when ill? Sorry, not seeing anything particularly special about this. Nobody's accusing Mitt of being a heartless b****d or anything (but his "people skills" with the rest of us could use some help).

(2,322 posts)...Are they applauding these stories?
Which is to say, it doesn't in the least surprise me that Ann would find Mitt's actions toward her extraordinary ("My MS didn't matter to him! He still loved me! Isn't that remarkable?" . I mean between wealth, politics, religious fanaticism and conservative values, she's undoubtedly surrounded by entitled people who shrink from you if you're sick, abandon you if you're at all different. This is a world where spouses are undoubtedly embarrassed if their wife/husband isn't beautiful and healthy and rich. For Mitt to still snuggle up to her after her diagnosis was probably amazing to her. Heroic even.
What this says about Ann isn't much or surprising. What it says about the Republican party, however, is pretty crazy. How far into Ayn Rand, Evangelical bizarro-land has this political party gone if this story has them applauding and nodding about what an amazing guy Mitt is? Have they come to expect all their politicians to be like Newt?
