We believe my Mom died early because she drank grapefruit juice every day with her medications. Grapefruit juice causes your body to take in a lot more of the drug than you normally would naturally. Evidently, it sounds like CBD may have the same issue so if you are taking a anxiety medication, blood thinners or even using pain relievers you may want to be careful to not do it too much together and I would for sure talk to your doctor about any such combinations.
This is probably more of an issue if you used CBD regularly.
xperts share how cannabidiol can impact anxiety medication, blood thinners and even pain relievers
Snip: Other experts seem to agree. Nearly 60 percent of the medications on the market are metabolized through a set of liver enzymes called cytochrome P450, or CYP450 that are, coincidentally, the same enzymes that break down CBD, Henry explained. Previous research suggests that CBD is a very strong inhibitor of the CYP450 enzymes. This means that if you take CBD while on another medication, it could block these critical enzymes, allowing more of the medication to get into your system.
So, lets say youre on a medication like warfarin or Coumadin, a really common medication we give to a lot of patients to thin their blood, Henry said. If [CBD] is blocking the metabolism of warfarin, that warfarin is now higher and more active and can either become toxic or cause other problems. In the case of a blood thinner like warfarin, other problems could entail a traumatic bleed or a dangerous hemorrhage, she added.
The same goes for benzodiazepines (or benzos) like Xanax or Ativan, which are used to treat anxiety. If CBD is taken in conjunction with one of these drugs, it could increase the side effects and potentially cause you to feel more sedated or drowsy. In some rare cases, the drug combo may become toxic or even interfere with your respiratory system, according to Henry. Doctors suspect that certain antibiotics and even NSAIDs (think Aleve or Advil) are altered by CBD consumption as well, Hurd said.

(33,643 posts)Obviously, err on the side of caution, tell your doctor everything you take, etc, etc.
But this story sounds awfully convenient for Big Pharma.
Kinda feel like we, as a society, would've 'noticed by now' if cannabinol consumption with these other relatively common drugs they mention ... was somehow deadly.
I'm no doctor and obviously caution is in order, but ...
May I also say it's ridiculous that we don't have like 40 years worth of in-depth studies on effects of cannibinols and interactions w/other meds? Thanks, stupid-ass War on Drugs!

(33,643 posts)My old man has smoked massive amounts of pot pretty much daily since the 1960's, and huffs up Roxy 30's (30 mg of pure oxycodone) every 3-4 waking hours ... and he's 75 and been doing that for about ... oh ... 20 years (well, for the first 10 it was Oxycontin).
Not that I RECOMMEND THIS, by any stretch and tolerance plays a HUGE role here.
But I'm pretty certain there's no 'inherent' toxicity involved, or he'd be LONG dead.
Just sayin'

(28,959 posts)See my story below from two nights ago. It may not have had anything to do with the THC but it got me wondering and looking this stuff up.

(297,520 posts)I don't take any "medication" so I'm good with my CBD oil.
I really like how it helps me to sleep at night. I only take it every other night.. Alternately I take melatonin spray.. and I'm good to go.

(39,343 posts)Jeez that was close.
That's why we need to study weed and it's effects, so that we can figure stuff like this out.

(28,959 posts)Then this week my anxiety issue popped back up. The doctor at the clinic said I was fine to take the anxiety medicine with THC along with the sleeping pill. A couple of nights ago I thought I was in hell! Crazy stuff but did fall asleep. However, I also got up to go to the bathroom and fainted. I am in really good shape so this shook me. I woke up like an hour later lying on the hard tile with a small bump on my head and a sore knee. So I started to check into this closer and found this stuff out. Hard to say if the THC had anything to do with it but I am not going to chance it again.

(39,343 posts)I seriously smoke a lot but also have pain issues and have have other meds. I haven't been taking but now I know not to mix.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)I would definitely avoid adding a 3rd psychoactive substance to that mixture. I seriously doubt the gummie would push you over the edge to death or anything, but the idea that it could make you more dizzy and put you on the ground on the way to the can in the middle of the night when mixed with anxiety and sleeping meds? Hell yeah that's very possible.
In fact I'd be pretty careful with just those two for awhile. Hopefully the need for one or the other abates shortly ... optimally, the gummies would do it all for ya

(36,876 posts)Fluconazole on top of coumadin put me in the emergency room with a high INR.
Two months after stopping Fluconazole, I had a bleeding ulcer and almost died.
Cause and effect? No way to prove or disprove it.

(36,876 posts)Closest to death I have ever been.
Two days unconscious, lots of blood, plasma and platelets.
Cat scan, surgery down the throat.
Didn't know a bit of it.
My girlfriend told me later.
Had an ongoing delusional dream with an ongoing storyline. Very complex.
DU was part of it.
Someone wrote a piece of code so bad that just opening the page crashed the internet (your computer) for about 40 minutes.
Of course dozens of folks copied and pasted it into their headlines.
Woke up very briefly realizing I might be about to die.
Was slightly pissed off about it until I realized I had no control over it.
Then stopped worrying about it.
Worried less than two minutes, maybe less than one.
One advantage.... there was no one else in the room to tell me what to think.
Thought that if I did not go back to sleep, I would not die. Not clear thinking.
Went to sleep not knowing if I was going to wake up. I was very aware of that.
Several days in ICU.
I owe those nurses something fierce.
Took them a large package of chocolates.
Woke up about 8:00.
Told gf to call my regular doctor and cancel my 5:00 appt.
Too late... it was 8:00pm
Don't know how I could possibly remember that appt.

(20,586 posts)watched out for incompatible drug combinations but found out that is not the case. Looks like we are on our own to figure it out.

(36,876 posts)When the ER doctor heard that combination, he was already walking out of the room.
Stop the fluconazole.
Instant analysis and solution.

(18,869 posts)epi dogs use CBD oil.
They usually wait at least two hours before giving the CBD oil. They give the epi meds usually 2 times a day then wait two hours before giving CBD.
Some people have had good results that way.

(25,183 posts)how many doctors really know that much about CBD? It's not like drug companies send them on junkets to the Caribbean to find out about it.
