Lost in a wall of smoke

By Jason Samenow July 5 at 12:12 PM

... The fireworks and lack of wind resulted in a towering wall of smoke so thick that it not only ruined many views but caused Washington’s air quality to plummet to worst in the nation.

Within minutes of the fireworks exploding into the sky, smoke filled the air above and downwind of where they were ignited (behind the Lincoln Memorial and at West Potomac Park). A lack of wind allowed the smoke to collect, building a giant wall that partially or completely obscured views between Southwest Washington and downtown, including along the Mall ...

While winds weren’t completely calm, at speeds under 5 mph they weren’t strong enough to disperse the smoke cloud, which crawled to the east and northeast (from the west and southwest). This prevailing wind direction did push the smoke away from the Virginia side of the Potomac River. While the view from the District stank, it was fantastic in Rosslyn ...

Ryan Stauffer, an air quality meteorologist, tweeted that the concentration of fine particular matter (PM 2.5) at North Capitol Street was the highest in the nation following the show. “The monitor along Benning Rd NE and DC-295 had two hours of almost 500 micrograms per cubic meter,” he tweeted. “Those numbers rival highest values from the California wildfires last year” ...

Despite cutting more than 80 environmental regulations, appointing a climate change denier to the National Security Council and giving senior administration roles to people who worked for the fossil fuel industry, President Donald Trump will deliver a speech Monday that a White House spokesman said will "recognize his administration's environmental leadership and America's role in leading the world," as the Guardian was the first to report.

Trump intends to tout the country's clean air and water. Although, he often boasts that the U.S. has the cleanest air in the world, statistics show otherwise. The nonprofit Health Effects Institute's State of Global Air 2019 report ranked the United States 37th dirtiest out of 195 countries for ozone, also known as smog.

Furthermore, a report published last month showed that the U.S. had more days with unhealthy air during the first two years of Trump's term than in the previous four years, as the Associated Press reported ...

Usually the fireworks on this telecast are so beautiful but this year, they were blurred by the walls of smoke. It looked like the camera people were searching for the best shot, but it was a big mess. Just think Trump touted the people who put on the display.

Was it really just the weather? New York's fireworks looked great on NBC. "Everything Trump touches dies." You may argue that it was the weather, but this royal "f-up" can ruin almost anything.

Here in Colorado, the real fireworks were put on by mother nature in an incredible yet unusual lightning storm that lasted over two hours and gave us some nice rain. You can't out do mother nature. In unincorporated areas, people were really firing off fireworks and there were some"ok" displays from a nearby city, but it suffered from the rain and lightning.
