Judge Hazel orders discovery to begin in Census case (a good thing)

Katie Phang

@KatiePhang
‼️Judge George Hazel orders that discovery commence in the Census citizenship question litigation. This provides the Plaintiffs with the ability to continue to dig up the true, pretextual reasons behind the Trump Administration’s desire to put the question in the Census.

There was information that was not found until after the Supreme Court heard the case.

Read about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2019/06/28/us/ap-us-census-citizenship-question-mastermind.html

Basically, the father of gerrymandered maps to give republicans control, his data will now be able to be used in court.

After his death, his estranged daughter, Stephanie Hofeller, was visiting her mother when she found several of her father's hard drives and thumb drives. She said in a deposition that she was looking for family photos. She found them — along with her father's work.

She told Common Cause, an advocacy group then claiming that North Carolina's congressional and state legislative maps were drawn unconstitutionally to favor Republicans, about the drives and eventually handed them over through a subpoena. Republicans have challenged how they were obtained, saying in court documents that Kathleen Hofeller has dementia and did not have the capacity to let her daughter take the files.

Hofeller has dementia and did not have the capacity to let her daughter take the files."

Unless her husband specifically stated that the daughter should not get any documents (which appears not to be the case), or that those documents should be given to someone else, I don't see how they have a leg to stand on. In fact, it would be interesting to see if Stephanie Hofeller has power of attorney over her mother, which would make it a non issue entirely ?

I believe the judiciary is going to save us because the legislative branch is totally letting us down.
Thank you Judge George Hazel. You sir, are a patriot!

One simply cannot expect the So-Called Ruler of the United States to give up his weekend plans, just because some judge decided he needs more information!

Twitter better switch on extra capacity this holiday weekend! It'll be a scorcher.
