GOP women criticize their own party for not actually wanting to elect more women

By
Dan Desai Martin -July 9, 2019

The Republican Party is so sexist that GOP women wish their party would act more like Democrats.

There are more women who have credibly accused Trump of sexual assault or harassment (22) than Republican women who are serving in the House of Representatives (13). No wonder GOP women are dismayed at the lack of support they receive from party leadership, as the New York Times reported Tuesday.

"We are so welcomed in the background to help volunteer, to help spread information, but when it comes time for a woman to really step up into the spotlight, I almost feel like it's crickets,” Elana Doyle, a 26-year-old Republican contemplating a run for office, told the Times. "I admire that about the Democrats, how they embrace women and they put them on a pedestal and they say, 'We need you.'"

Democrats don't put women on a pedestal, but they do seem much more willing to treat women as equals who are capable of both running for office and being in leadership. And they recognize that actively recruiting and supporting women candidates helps overcome the structural barriers many women face to running for office.

After the 2018 midterms, the number of Democratic women in the House skyrocketed while the number of Republican women plummeted from 23 to a mere 13. While Republican leadership is dominated by men, Democrats elected Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, and 10 additional women are in leadership roles. Further, five women are chairs of committees, including Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) as chair of the powerful Appropriations Committee.

Elana Doyle clearly understands what women are good enough to do for the GOP: Stuff envelopes, staff the phone bank, go on coffee runs, and look pretty. What they aren't good enough for is to be treated as equals, and to take charge of things themselves.

WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU, ELANA?

Re-examine their own positions. Realize it all comes from a group that thinks they're not good enough.

that drove the Blue Wave. Hopefully it continues into the general.

One good thing: With more women incumbants, perhaps more women will come out in support of them and that can bleed over into other slots on the ballots. Women supporting women, who'd a thunk?

Senselessly for even having an opinion. At least if she didn't get permission from her husband first.

They honestly think that just by running a woman - or as a woman - that's automatically going to bring in the women vote. Oh, Obama beat Hillary to get the nomination? Well, let's run Sarah Palin - all the little darlings upset about a woman losing will support us now. What? Policy? They don't care about policy! They have the same sex organs!

And they're baffled when it doesn't happen.

Of course, they do the same with non-white people. If we run this Black guy, all his fellow Blacks will vote for him! Whaaaaa? He didn't win? Shut up about policy... he had similar melanin levels, damn it! He should have been a shoo-in!

They have the power to change things, they always have. Leave the party; go Independent, or better yet, Democratic. The GOP hasn't left women because they were never for women in any way. I don't even know how women even vote for a Repub., let alone run as one. Let the GOP blatantly represent men exclusively and see how long that lasts.

No we don't. We recognize women and men as political equals; no one is placed above or below anyone else.

Typical Republican, to think that admiration and respect are things only 'people on a pedestal' are worthy of...

Simply recognizing a woman's ability to legislate is somehow "putting them on a pedestal." Says a lot about the GOP mindset.
