2. "Taxes" are not voluntary. Compliance, as a practical matter, is,

in the sense that the vast majority file and pay taxes without the government having to knock on their door and compel them to file and pay.

But filing and paying are required. It tends to end badly for those who don't do so when they have a tax liability.

Payment of taxes is mandatory.

The method by which you do so is to volunteer information about your income, etc..

In other words, the IRS doesn’t send you a bill each year. It’s up to you to calculate what you owe and pay it.

6. I knew a man who decided to believe that taxes were voluntary-

he had several kind of extreme views about God choosing him to be "elect". And he was actually successful in business despite being sort of a loon (and mean). He started parking millions every year in secret accounts, and the IRS caught him and prosecuted, and that was his argument, "It's voluntary!"
He went to prison for a year or so. Mandatory.
