The captain on audio questioning Boeing has passed away

https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-played-down-737-max-second-crash-concern-pilots-audio-reports-2019-5

From the Allied Pilots Association (American Airlines Pilots Union Announcement) July 11, 2019

We are sad to report that APA Safety Committee Chairman CA Mike “Taz” Michaelis has died.

CA Michaelis had been receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer and also recently underwent gall bladder surgery. At the APA Board of Directors’ spring meeting, he informed those present that his prospects for recovering from cancer were fairly promising, putting it this way: “Taz has been taken off of the endangered species list.” Initial indications are that his death was due to complications from surgery.

“Mike told everyone who came to APA to do Safety Committee work the same thing,” said Safety Committee Deputy Chairman-ASAP CA Jeff Raines. “He would say ‘take care of yourself, your family, and your God first. Take care of your American Airlines responsibilities second. And take care of APA third. Don’t get those things out of order.’ In my humble opinion, Mike was without a doubt the most dedicated, hard-working safety professional that APA has ever seen.”

CA Michaelis began serving on the then-APA Safety and Training Committee in 1999 as an ASAP volunteer. He served for three years as Safety Committee Chairman beginning in 2007, and reassumed his chairmanship in 2016.

A 28-year veteran of the United States Air Force, CA Michaelis flew F-16s with the 457th, 62nd, and 13th Fighter Squadrons. He also served at the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

“Mike was one of the best bosses I have ever had,” said Safety Committee Deputy Chairman-Operations CA Gavin Tade. “He gave you the tasking, supplied you with the resources, and let you get the work done for the pilots of American Airlines. And something else about Mike — his military service was really important to him, too. He was the consummate fighter pilot.”

Born on July 24, 1960, CA Michaelis is survived by his wife, Dana; son, Austin; son, Brandon; and daughter, Michaela.

Service arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the APA Emergency Relief and Scholarship Fund.

Godspeed, CA Michaelis. You were an absolute one of a kind, and we will miss your characteristic bluntness, wit, and tenacity.
