(10,431 posts)Steele was on TV this morning, said pretty much the same thing. That quote needs to be plastered on billboards.

(1,660 posts)Especially as Steele is referring to the so-called evangelicals.
But somehow it'll still go over their heads, though. Watch.

(9,993 posts)We refrain from talking politics because otherwise we would do nothing but scream at one another. From past discussions, I understand that sermons are often about who to vote for or how the current president is either doing good or bad, depending on whether he is a Republican or a Democrat. I assume that theres a coordinated effort from some central group that disseminates talking points to evangelical pastors, the point being that evangelicals hear similar propaganda every Sunday morning in church. A few news articles or quotes from once-prominent Republicans will have no impact whatsoever. Theyre like hate radio or Fox News addicts. If you listen only to one source of information, then youll never have to confront the idea that the source may be wrong or that you should reexamine your beliefs about the world. Better to stick your head in the sand and have someone else tell you what to believe than to do the work of gathering information and thinking for yourself.

(2,603 posts)Then the larger organization influences the local pastors. It is usually never an open discussion of politics, and they will claim it is only a discussion of the "issues". But the discussion is primarily abortion, and then possibly about how the country "went to hell" in 1964 because of decisions about prayer in school (as if it was a paradise before).
We were attending a church where the pastor and wife (both African-American) were invited to a conference by the Copelands and came back trying to convince the church to vote against Obama. That was our last day there.

(90,690 posts)...in DC a year or so back. These were Republican interns of course. Who better, right? I say that because I've listened to the man evolve, and this turned out to be exceptional.
He talked about his own roots as a conservative, and it turns out he was a seminarian. When he spoke of the classic vows, his expansive views might have led another man to become a Democrat -- as they did for the Berrigan brothers, obviously.
Then someone asked if the Republican Party should be leading the country on the morals issue, and minus the "motherfucker" he said what he said for this book, beginning with an impassioned: "Oh HELL no!"
I'd say Michael Steele has been woke for awhile.

(9,426 posts)BIGLY. McConnell got a huge chunk, distributed that among the faithful and the rest is history. We are stuck with the biggest laughingstock for a president that most other countries would have rejected from the start.

(54,384 posts)All these media appearances, the guy remains in demand, despite being relatively boring on camera. So, to do that, you have to be something out of the ordinary.
Conformist Trumpanzees? Most Republicans are as conformist as they can be, marching in lock step as if they were a Red Army honor guard, marching before the party leaders in Red Square in Moscow on May 1st.
Democrats in disagreement? Hell, is there any other kind?
But a dissident Republican? Now THERE is a newsworthy endangered species. Switch parties and join the Democrats? Noble, but you just gave your media star status a shelf life of about ten days. But stay a Republican and insist that the party may have lost its way, but it's still your party? Now THERE'S a stance that takes guts. OK, he's got SOME cover because the last thing Republicans will do these days is give Democrats MORE ammunition to call them racist, but sooner or later you just KNOW Trump is going to lose it over something Steele says, and then he'll call Steele something worth censuring Trump all over again. Now THERE is a headline--the Democrats in the House censuring Trump for something he said about a Republican!
So you see, I don't think Steele is staying a Republican out of conviction. Republicans with convictions became extinct with McCain's passing. I think Steele is staying a Republican because it gives him a longer media shelf life. After all, finding a Republican spouting something other than total garbage these days is about as startling as the discovery that the coelacanth was still alive.
