General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMost Americans approve of their Health Care, but not
the Insurance and Pharma companies. The often quoted polls don't often ask about the Insurance companies, just how they rate their over all health care. This is more about their Dr.s, clinics and hospitals. Finding info on Insurance companies is scarce, but the surveys I've seen show they do not have a high approval.
So the next time you hear people say Americans are satisfied with their health care and don't want Universal. They aren't comparing apples to apples. Universal health care, doesn't do away with our medical infrastructure, just how it is paid for. And people are not happy with the for profit heath insurance industry.
It's about the costs, not the care.

(11,738 posts)My employer provides pretty good benefits. There are a range of plans, that cover me fully and allow me to pay for dependents at a reduced wait. Last year we had really good insurance that covered hearing aids for my kids (both have hearing loss). This year, the rates went way up and I was going to have to pay over 800 per month (which I understand is still okay but not within our budget). We went with a cheaper plan with similar coverage and would allow us to stay with our providers. The coverage for DME is significantly less. They only cover 1000 for hearing aids that cost 5000 to 7000 dollars. So we have to wait and see about those devices and hope that we can get the better insurance next year.
The point of for profit businesses is profit. While that is more nuanced and complicated, the basic nature is that business is conducted at the lowest cost possible with a quality that is enough to maintain sales. For insurance that means covering at the lowest possible rates to keep doctors accepting the insurance, denying claims as much as possible, and making as much profit to keep their investors happy.
That is not a model for decent healthcare at all.

I like my healthcare providers. My insurance company is a crapfest of idiocy and complications and out of pocket costs.

October 2018 my husband had a serious stroke..had days and days of very expensive intensive-care treatments, involving 2 hospitals and ambulance...out of pocket expenses $135
He passed away and I dreaded getting mail for months, but the $135 is all I ever had to pay ..
