What would happen if a centrist Republican ran against Trump as an independent?

I feel like he would lose horribly, but I also fear that it would take some of the independents we need to win some of our state races and House and Senate races. A friend of mine from home has been floating this idea for a long time. He is a moderate Republican and didn't vote at all the last time.

William Weld is running. Could siphon off some Libertarian votes.

Damage him during the primaries.

Third party candidates and Independents can make things chaotic and unpredictable. We want Trump=dislikers to vote for the Democratic candidate, not get an alternative.

This could siphon as many votes from the Democratic Party candidate as from Trump.

They would sooner go former-Republican-cum-Independent than Democratic.
