WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)Donald J. Trump attempted to further distance himself from a racist chant shouted at a North Carolina campaign rally earlier this week by denying that he had attended the rally.
I wasnt there, Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. If I had been there, you can be sure I would have done everything I could to stop them from chanting.
Trump said that he was furious that thousands of people had apparently assembled in North Carolina to chant racist things when he was nowhere near the rally and thus totally incapable of intervening.
Its the kind of thing I would have been disgusted by if I had been there to hear it, he said. Unfortunately, I wasnt there.
On Capitol Hill, Senator Lindsey Graham lashed out at reporters for persistently claiming that Trump had, in fact, attended the rally. If he says he wasnt there, then, damn it, he wasnt there, a visibly furious Graham said. How do you people sleep at night?

(14,498 posts)"darn, his minders are not doing their job of monitoring and controlling his lies, and let a bad one slip through".
Absolutely nothing will surprise me anymore with this bunch in power......
"One day at a time" in many, many ways.......

(206,420 posts)And I think of Jimmy Carter - He promised to always "tell the truth," so the media of the time went over every statement he made, looking for anything - and now we have Trump who shocks everyone if he manages to let anything slip out which isn't a blatant lie! One Day at a Time is tough when dealing with Trump since every day he gets even worse.

(14,498 posts)I don't think any of us consider it normal. The most disgraceful and difficult to understand part to me is some of our churches' buying into it without raising the roof and disowning tRump
I can't speak for what the Republican voters are thinking but apparently many are so brainwashed they dare not even question any of his statements.......
Just as how they might respond to anyone questioning their concept of a god, I think they have morbid fear of the truth and therefore stay in total blind denial. However, for example, almost all humans do that to a degree when it comes to facing the prospect of death.
It's hell being a scientist and having to face reality all the time......

(206,420 posts)Most of us here closely follow the news, we can name most senators on sight and are up to speed on current issues. But I realize that the average person isn't like us, they may vote, often by party, and it's hit or miss as to what news stories they happen to run across.
I had a conversation last week with a guy I've known for years, talented artist and gay in a long term relationship, but I know he doesn't follow the news. I told him that I'd taken part in the local protest the week before and he asked me what it was about (it made the front page of the local paper!). So I explained about the children at the border being separated from their parents and being held in what are pretty much cages.
And his response was "oh no, that can't be true!" I told him it was and so he asked why it wasn't being reported. I told him it was, but the media was not allowed to go into these places and when a congressional delegation went in, they were not allowed to bring in cell phones, but one snuck one in - and conditions were so bad that they were shocked - and this was when they were prepared for this visit!
I don't know if what I said made any impact - and this isn't the only example of someone I know who isn't a RWer or a Trump supporter, he just has no idea! And don't get me started on a long time AA friend (36 years come November) who was annoyed by a robocall from our congresswoman, so I sat down with her and explained who all her representatives were, including senators. And so before the last election, she asked my advice about who to vote for - so rather than confuse her, I said that I just vote a straight Democratic ticket. And she was delighted to hear that, told me she's a registered Democrat!

(14,498 posts)At least your friend seemed eager to learn, so job well done!
I suppose most of us here mistakenly assume the general public stays at least modestly informed with the news. Back in the day, everyone watched the evening news (with the choice of your favorite of three networks).
Some days I feel social media may destroy us by being many folks' only source of info.....
It's double-hell to be both a rational thinker and well informed these days. There's times I feel like taking about a one week break and just be irrational, ill-informed and dumb.....

(206,420 posts)Neither one of them is just not that interested, but at least they vote. And I may have woken him up to at least one current issue - and I've given her an easy out by just voting a straight ticket. She may not have much of a clue who she's voting for, but at least she'll be voting the right way!
As for the news, these days, there are so many times I just can't take it anymore and change the channel to Murder, She Wrote! At least with that, I know things will turn out okay in the end - and chances are that I'll remember the ending, anyway..

(1,514 posts)it sounds like something Drumpf would say or do. It kind of reminds me of these couple of article from a few years back; they're satirical as well but sound believable.
