When I first got my cell phone about a year ago, every few days I would check voicemail and hear (and erase) multiple telemarketer pitches.
Nowadays, I can go literally weeks without getting any.
And I don't have any blocking software on my cell phone.
Anyone else notice this?

(1,527 posts)I have even gotten calls from my own home phone number. They especially like to use numbers that make it look like a locally originated call.
The feds did take down a couple of robo call outfits in the last few months which slowed them down some.
But I use my phones for business calls too so I do have to answer most of the calls. Some weeks are worse than others.

(25,183 posts)they won't work, either.
My default "ringtone" is one second of silence, with no vibration. Yes, I see if I got the missed call, but if they don't leave a message, I don't worry about it. All of my contacts have an audible ringtone attached to them, so that while I'm in the presence of my phone, I don't miss anything from someone I actually care to talk to.
In addition to the "your computer's going to die" and "We hear you'll be on Medicare this year," I suddenly started getting lots of political calls from republicans in Mississippi around the general election last year. If I see MS in the caller ID, I block it.
Congrats to you and I'll be watching to see if you figure it out.

(16,646 posts)It's getting worse.
There's the "we can lower your interest rate" call.
There's the "IRS is suspending your SS number" (whatever that means)
There's the "we're raising funds for the police fund" call.
And the ever popular "free vacation".
And now I'm getting spam texts along with the 15 responses with "who's this" from the other recipients.

(37,748 posts)I can easily go two months w/o one robocall, and then one day, "poof", I begin getting five or six a day for a week or two, then after half a month or so, it goes blank again.

(38,311 posts)... and providers are in the process of implementing it, sometimes grudgingly.
Many robocallers are laying low, waiting to see how this shakes out.
Some providers are blocking the most blatant robocallers.

In June 2019, the Commission adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, which positions the agency to mandate the implementation of the SHAKEN/STIR caller ID authentication framework if the end-of-the-year deadline isn't met. This will allow the FCC to move directly to final rules if needed.

The FTC is also pushing against them.
In one alleged scam, a group called Veterans of America "used fake veterans' charities and illegal robocalls to get people to donate cars, boats and other things of value," the FTC said.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday announced "several victories" in its fight against illegal robocalls, including some that resulted in judgments in the millions of dollars.
"Under the court orders announced today, the defendants are banned from robocalling and most telemarketing activities, including those using an automatic dialer, and will pay significant financial judgments," the FTC said in a statement Tuesday. "The defendant in one of these cases provided the software platform that resulted in more than one billion illegal robocalls."

There are some possible freedom-of-speech implications.
What would happen if robocalls from one political party were tacitly allowed and all others blocked?

(29 posts)Well, It's 100% different for me. Since years ago, I almost get no telemarketing calls on my landline, but started last month, I received at lease 3 calls each and everyday from them! That's insane! Anyone know how to track the callers? I think I would try to sue them like what I read at this article https://www.whycall.me/news/my-4500-payday-from-a-telemarketer/.
