Charlotte City Council is looking into breaking the RNC 2020 contract
Doesn't look like they'll be able to do it. The City Council is majority Democrat and our Mayor, Vi Lyles, is also a Democrat. Despite most of the city being against it, they wanted the money that the convention would bring in. Looks like it's too late now.
![]() Link to tweet City Attorney Patrick Baker: If city broke #RNC2020 contract, not only would city be sued, but one or more other parties could seek a court order enjoining city from continuing to breach contract—IOW, force the city to host the convention. Die’s cast, it appears. #cltcc

4. Ummm, Greg Lacour, whose tweet I posted and is a journalist for Charlotte Mag
Tweeted this from the City Council meeting where it was discussed. They settled for condemning Trump's racism.
The city last year voted to host the 2020 Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to be nominated for a second term. Last week, council member Braxton Winston said the city attorney would present possible options to withdraw its support for the RNC — though the practicality of that is low. https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/rnc-2020/article232975797.html Link to tweet Diana Levitt calls on #CLTCC to withdraw from hosting #RNC2020. “I am wondering what the actual financial gain will be for risking the safety of your citizens” @wsoctv |

6. It was kinda hidden in a story about Trump's racism. I just noticed all these tweets from local
news sources who are at the City Council meeting right now.

8. I know my friends are NOT happy about the RNC coming there.
Surely there’ll be protests.

9. I'm getting bad vibes. The Proud Boys threatened to come to Charlotte to "shoot liberals".
They showed up armed at Trump's 2020 announcement in Florida so I'm sure they'll be here. The city of Charlotte is about 80% Democratic, so there will be plenty of people protesting.

7. I live an hour from Charlotte
I was too young to be in Chicago in 1968, maybe I’ll go mix it up a bit in Charlotte.
