You can see it in the eyes. Vacant, sort of glassy, dark and distant as if staring into a cave full of nails from a thousand miles and a million joyful lifetimes away.
It moves on to the skin, pale and ill-fitting like a mannequin in a human costume, like its not the slightest bit comfortable in there, closing around a sallow tightness of the mouth and lips, maybe a severity of haircut, the sweater buttoned a bit too tight and the collar cutting circulation to the vital organs, but most especially and obviously, to the heart.
Do you see it? Do you see it, most frequently and with a tragic sigh, in the women of the GOP, from the senseless female candidates themselves (Hi, Ms. Bachmann!) to the sallow wives and disoriented daughters of the ultraconservative males who fear and detest everything real women represent?
You know the look. Youve seen it a million times, this Oh my God how did I get here, this How can this really be my life, this look of deep and long-muted pain and/or dull resignation (Hi, Mrs. Vitter!), the long rusted-over knowledge that choices have been made and there was no other way, even though there was, even though there still is.

(27,630 posts)Granted, it would have been more politically correct if it were written by a woman and not Mark Morford. But if I had written it I would be standing behind every word.
I thought it was great.

(107 posts)the politically "incorrectness" of Jonathan Swift, but we chastise this...Come on guys! Madokie, I get what you are saying.

(7,237 posts)Another article written by a man that talks about women as if we're an entirely different species.
This reads like an article in Chickens magazine on how to evaluate a hen's appearance to tell if she's likely to be a good layer.
* This commentary brought to you by the Sisterhood of the Perpetually Offended.

(110,159 posts)but, i didnt think this article hit it out of the ball park or struck out. was a meh article to me.
what is bothersome is the continued group of people on du that want to grab popcorn, or talk about the " Sisterhood of the Perpetually Offended." as if they have some magic ball.

(13,616 posts)Without wrapping yourself in a sexist cloak . He could have said miserable people, and could have played out the hypocrisy of GOP women getting power by helping sexist males ruin their rights. But , like many comedians, Mark wants to enjoy slamming women too.
Quantess
(27,630 posts)if he had to neuter it to "miserable people". It was specifically about republican women and their uniquely 2nd class roles in the party.

(14,881 posts)I don't have that many people on ignore and now I'm wondering who in the heck replied.
Anyway, I don't like Morford's over the top writing style, and I don't like the way he ends his article at all, because the last thing women need is for a man to tell them what they need to do to fix their lives.
But I am glad somebody noticed how miserable, angry and fearful some GOP women look, in particular when "standing by their men" while their men deny hating women while apologizing for saying and doing things that show how much they hate and fear women. The looks on those women's faces jumped out at me the first time I saw that pic. Many people here commented on it, and I'm glad somebody in the media commented as well.
I recognize their miserable look because I wore it forever when growing up in my parent's GOP house.
I also have noticed how angry HRH Ann looks, even when she's smiling and sticking her foot in her mouth as she accidentally lectures us with what she really thinks. She is another bitter, angry person.
My teaparty sister, a stay-at-humongous lakefront-home mom to a neurotic lab that eats rocks (is he trying to commit suicide?), periodically overflows with such hate and rage and bitterness that for the 2nd time in my life I've cut off all communications with her.
