"SNIP.....

Ron Brownstein: “Donald Trump’s turn toward more overt racism in his ‘go back’ attacks on four Democratic congresswomen of color rests on an unspoken bet: that the women who are part of his core constituencies will respond to his acrimony as enthusiastically as the men.”

“But polling throughout Trump’s presidency has indicated that his belligerent and divisive style raises more concern among women voters than men in one of his most important cohorts: the white working class. And a new set of focus groups in small-town and rural communities offers fresh evidence that the gender gap over Trump within this bloc is hardening.”

I know many people on DU are convinced any trump voter is the spawn of satan. And I get it. Many are.

But my 83 year old heathy mother did and thought she would again. Now, this is a woman that volunteers countless hours at Habitat for Humanity, works in a kitchen feeding the homeless at a church that does not share her views and hosts a group of international workers in her house once a month to promote cultural exchanges. She’s not poor. Dad died 15 years ago and both of them were successful.

But 2 things got her. Fox News and Abortion.

Imagine my joy when I talked to her last week and she told me in terms only an 82 year old southern woman can come up with she will not be voting for him again. Horrible man!

Then she started a rant about how poorly we southerners have treated black folks over the years and trump wants to go back to her childhood! Then started in one how gay folks are born that way and we should leave them alone to live their lives! I’m like, where the hell did that come from! I live 1000 miles away from her, but my very liberal sister and brother in law live in the same town with her. I knew they had been sharing movies with her about these subjects, but was shocked at the change.

I had thought about doing an OP on this, but it is too personal and I am always a little worried about my privacy and what with the internet and all.

Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share it. I’m still thrilled. As you might imagine we never talked politics. I used to be a conservative and she said me changing made her start thinking.

The bubble can be broken.

Former printer here (four color work - like magazines - that what the CyanMagentaYellowblacK of my handle is for). I worked in Mobile 28 years, and my mom was the same: Faux News and anti-abortion. Single issue republican. She never got past it.
