Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen speaking at a Republican event this month expressed concern that the United States is "going to look like South American countries very quickly," warning that new immigrants will not be able to "assimilate" at the rate that they are arriving.
Allen made her remarks during a July 15 event commemorating "Mormon Political Pioneers" at the Arizona Republican Party headquarters in Phoenix.
Phoenix New Times obtained audio of Allen's comments on Thursday, the full version of which is posted at the bottom of this page. In a text message, Allen told New Times that her comments on assimilation were inspired by a study from a University of North Carolina professor.
"I said we needed to be able to control our immigration process so that we have time to assimilate people into our society and economic system. Jobs, housing, education, and health care," she said. "Plus to be able to teach them about the American form of government. That's all there was to it."

(38,445 posts)...I too am an expert on..."assimilation"...oops..not an "expert" a product of "assimilation" My grandfather & grandmother came here in 1910 from Ukraine, what was then Russia. (my dad's parents) They spoke Yiddish. I remember grandpa had a tough time with English. Grandma took me to my first movie at age 5. I doubt she understood much of it. But she took me. They assimilated as best they could.
... My mom was also a child from parents who came from Russia. I never met them because they passed away young. I am lucky to be a grandchild of 4 people who came here looking for a better life. There were entire neighborhoods of Yiddish speaking people and gradually or quickly they learned the way here in the U.S.A. They learned English as best they could... Their children and grandchildren love this country as did the original people who came. There has always been distrust of immigrants. The hatred spoken by the Republican state senator is not new. It is very old and it is what it is: (just another form of racism and hate, hate, and more hate)

(22,397 posts)I thought what she meant by 'Look like South American Countries' was something like being ruled by a right wing military dictatorship, supported by cruel wealthy oligarchs, where opponents of the regime disappear to be tortured and murdered.
But that is because silly me cares about human rights, and Sylvia Allen cares about "looks white, speak English, worships the mormon god"

Yeah, were already there. As for immigration, these nitwits know nothing about the history of the country, and Arizona in particular. It was Mexico.

(35,445 posts)won't flee to here. How about stop interferring in their governments. Overthrowing democratically elected leaders. Installing puppets that brutalize their people.
How about we try that, huh?
