As faith leaders who serve at Washington National Cathedral ¬ the sacred space where America gathers at moments of national significance we feel compelled to ask: After two years of President Trumps words and actions, when will Americans have enough? --snip--
We have come to accept a level of insult and abuse in political discourse that violates each persons sacred identity as a child of God. We have come to accept as normal a steady stream of language and accusations coming from the highest office in the land that plays to racist elements in society.
This week, President Trump crossed another threshold. Not only did he insult a leader in the fight for racial justice and equality for all persons; not only did he savage the nations from which immigrants to this country have come; but now he has condemned the residents of an entire American city. Where will he go from here?
Make no mistake about it, words matter. And, Mr. Trumps words are dangerous.
These words are more than a dog-whistle. When such violent dehumanizing words come from the President of the United States, they are a clarion call, and give cover, to white supremacists who consider people of color a sub-human infestation in America. They serve as a call to action from those people to keep America great by ridding it of such infestation. Violent words lead to violent actions.
-more-- I highly recommend reading the entire letter as signed by:
The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington
The Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, Dean of Washington National Cathedral
The Rev. Canon Kelly Brown Douglas, Canon Theologian of Washington National Cathedral

(17,912 posts)Anyone who doesn't follow their particular brand of Christianity cannot, by definition, be Christians. I've heard that from them for years and years. They actually believe that crap. They are...the American Taliban.

(6,172 posts)anyone who follows their particular brand of "Christianity" is, by definition, most definitely NOT Christian.
They can fool themselves, but they can't fool God.

(21,646 posts)It really does say a lot about the state of this country that he is still in the white house, that a majority are not for impeachment and he still has a lot of fanatic followers
He started his whole campaign coming down an escalator spewing racist bullshit and most of the country said zip
That Clinton was so falsely vilified by a large part of the population, even many dem party members also speaks volumes on how messed up the american mindset is imo

(82,849 posts)Trump really likes picking fights, but curiously mostly with persons of color or obvious targets like chuck-n-nancy. I wonder why he's so reticent about punching back at the National Cathedral folks? Is he afraid of them? Does he realize he can't bully them with worldly taunts about their ratings or their net worth? His silence is interesting. Maybe we should bring it up to internet trolls, see what they think of Trump's shrinking violet response to the National Cathedral?

(12,583 posts)McCain had the right idea by announcing while he was alive that Trump would not be invited to his funeral. (Unfortunately Ivanka and Jared crashed the event.)
Traditionally, the president is one of two keynote speakers at the prayer breakfast. Maybe it's time to break that tradition.
