(81,265 posts)I still despise Reagan. His legacy has made for a lot of harm done to way too many people.

(11,306 posts)that this really HAS been the Republican party .. for many, many years. Those of us that remember the "Welfare queen in a Cadillac" aren't really surprised at all. Reagan was always a "colorful character" and never accused of being terribly bright. These words fit neatly into his mouth. The party maintained a facade of "country club" republicans for years .. but it was always built on a toxic stew of racism (Atwater, Willy Horton, Rove) and enforced privilege. And, in private, the country club set had pretty much the same values and opinions as Dear Ronnie.

(230 posts)There is no surprise in that tape. He openly told a false narrative that a welfare queen picks up her welfare check in a Cadillac at the welfare office. He said it at the Republican Convention.

(32,083 posts)This is where the KKK murdered civil rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. 'Nuff said. Yep. I was pretty obvious all along that he was a racist fuck.

(18,868 posts)I am kinda of raged out. Rich white guys have been racist forever. But the Twit has just taken it to a whole new level. I have to parcel out my rage now. And the Twit and company get most if it. And Moscow Mitch.

(43,182 posts)Unfortunately no one is really grasping it as the prima facia proof of the Republican partys Southern Strategy at play, and a good reason as to where we are today with them.

(54,378 posts)Maybe their reaction is like mine: I knew Reagan was like that forty years ago. This isnt news. Its common knowledge. Or, at least, it should be.

(90,339 posts)... its best to label the KGOP as the party of racist before Trump as much as possible.
Screw them

(43,182 posts)There were all out efforts to enshrine him as one of America's Great Presidents and singlehandedly award him credit for winning the Cold War.
Of course we here knew otherwise. Out there, however, it should be more shocking.

(54,378 posts)My local airport where I grew up was named after him. Now, nearly 30 years later, the locals still call it "National Airport," or just "DCA."
No one EVER calls it "Reagan" unless they are required to (radio weather announcers, e.g.), or are from out of town.

(300 posts)The devolution of the Republican Party can be traced from Reagan to Trump, but Reagan usually kept his personal demons cloaked and at bay, whereas with Trump they're in full hideous view. While never as good as his supporters still claim, Reagan could be disarming, genial, and even charming, an act which fooled many...

(32,083 posts)with each other in a debate. Apparently, debaters are all supposed to agree with each other? As for brain-dead Ronnie, anyone who paid attention to where he kicked off his presidential campaign knows he was a racist fuck. They're not going to bring this up, because he's a has-been. Just like they ignore Dumbya.

(82,849 posts)No sense bringing up Reagan's racism, because it has nothing to do with what's happening today. Sure, it LOOKS like you can draw a bright line between Nixon's Southern Strategy, Reagan's racism (sotto voce for public pronouncements, of course), and present-day Republicans who are letting their racist flag fly freely and proudly, but that's just a ruse. Or something.
I sincerely hope that the battles we're seeing today over commemorations of the Confederacy on public lands morphs into stripping Reagan's name off of every public edifice.
