BOSTON (AP) A granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 while running for president, has died. Saoirse Kennedy Hill was 22.
The Kennedy family confirmed the death in a statement Thursday night following reports that a person had been found unresponsive that day at the storied Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, after police responded to a call about a possible drug overdose. The statement was issued by Brian Wright OConnor, a spokesman for Saoirse Hills uncle, former congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II.
Hill was the daughter of Robert and Ethel Kennedys fifth child, Courtney, and Paul Michael Hill, who was one of four people falsely convicted in the 1974 Irish Republican Army bombings of two pubs.
She lit up our lives with her love, her peals of laughter and her generous spirit, the statement said, adding she was passionate about human rights and womens empowerment and worked with indigenous communities to build schools in Mexico.
She attended Boston College, where she was a member of the class of 2020, the university confirmed to The Boston Globe.
The Cape & Islands district attorneys office said Barnstable police responded to a home for a reported unattended death Thursday afternoon, according to a statement cited by news outlets. Barnstable police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorneys office were investigating.
The family statement did not include a cause of death, but audio of a Barnstable police scanner call obtained by The Associated Press said officers were responding to a report of a drug overdose at the compound.

(23,658 posts)I by no means meant to suggest that the Kennedys' losses were any greater than anyone else's. I would say the same for any family I know that suffered such losses.
The fact the Kennedy family has been in the news and public eye for close to 60 years makes them a very public family. Hence the publicity/headlines. Which would be true for anyone/family with a public persona.
