Pit bull kills copperhead, saves owner in Tennessee

https://www.newschannel5.com/news/pit-bull-protects-owner-from-copperhead-snake

...."Haley McCormack said it's dark when she gets home from work; so she didn't see the snake lurking in a corner by the stairs leading to her door. That's when McCormack's pit bull, Arlo, sprung into action.

"It was in this leaf-like area over here, and it was recoiled back so it was going to strike, he got there before I could go any further, he grabbed it by the tail, and then just started kind of shaking it," McCormack said, "While he was shaking it, it was biting his face, it got him three times for sure, possibly four."
...

"To think how much loyalty, and love he had for me, to risk his own life for mine, it's really special. It makes me have more respect for him not just as a dog, but as a family member, somebody that protects me," McCormack said.

Arlo is feeling much better after getting anti-venom, pain medication, and CBD oil."....(more)

Who is an occasional guest in my home when my brother travels. She's a sweety. And napping on my spot!

Anyway.....

The nose of the one that got bit swelled up such that it looked like a Shar Pei!

Poor but very brave and protective Bully pup pup!!

I almost stepped on a big one of almost 20 inches while hiking as a Bot Scout. They are hard to see whereas moccasins and diamondbacks are bigger and make more ruckus.

Luckily we don’t have them in central Florida. We do have Pygmy Rattlers but they seem shyer than copperheads. I found one in my yard several years ago. It was easy to put in a trash can and relocate to nearby woods.

I briefly worked for a vet and several dogs came in after being bit. Always around the head. They would swell up something horrible but all lived.

Glad the dog lived. And something to think of. That dog probably cost 1/10 to treat as the owner would have cost. Treatment is pretty much the same.

a few months back my daughter's electricity went out, The repair crew found a big copperhead in the power box. They killed it and tied it to the bumper of their truck so they could measure it. Don't remember how long, but you can see from the image that is was a big one.

She went into an area of weeds and didn't know what hit her. We spent that night at the emergency vet. She's fine now.

Next door neighbor ripped out a wood deck to pour a patio.
I think he disturbed a nest?

This is the world's only semiaquatic viper, usually found in or near water, particularly in slow-moving and shallow lakes, streams, and marshes. The snake is a strong swimmer and has even been seen swimming in the ocean.

We live on a brackish bay.

Dogs are so wonderful! They are such loyal, loving protectors.

God, I hate snakes. What is the point of them? They are such disgusting creatures.

We liked them and did not fear them, as most were harmless. They are beneficial, as some eat rats and mice, and others eat insects. In the old days, when farmers kept harvested corn in "cribs," they were very happy to have snakes nearby to keep the mice from eating it.

Most loyal, brave, and easy to train dogs there are.

Copperheads are an important part of the ecosystem. Not necessary to kill them on sight.
