New gun laws and lessons from '94

I know I don’t write much but I read daily in three forums Gen, Late breaking news and Primary.
This is my perspective and it maybe different than yours.

I understand people are hurting they are scared and have an overwhelming need to “do something”. I honestly don’t have answers for gun violence. What I do worry about is in a zeal to do something we cause other casualties.

I oppose many of the changes being said in the wake of most shootings. I understand many don’t understand why and I will try my best to explain.

The worst thing we can do as a country is give more power to current law enforcement. I say that with the fact that many of my family including my wife are LEO. She agrees with me if that matters.

Right now drug laws are changing across the country including right here in bright red Oklahoma. Simple possession of and use of cannabis is becoming a non crime. That is taking away a bludgeoning tool used primarily on people of color and that’s good. The phrase I smell pot has been used for years to upend many good people’s lives and cost them money and time in prison.

Now I read on here about giving law enforcement more power to raid homes and cars searching for guns. Do you honestly believe it will be used fairly? When they raid a home looking for guns but find an undocumented person what do you think will happen? You gave them the authority to go there, do you really think they will go after the white guy who keeps to himself? You also want long prison sentences for those people caught with a gun. Who do you think is going to serve those sentences? Those with money will have great legal representation and probably make a plea deal ,those using a public defender not so much. We already see this with every other crime what makes this any different? We learned a lot from the Crime Bill of ‘94 don’t forget the lessons.

I know others on the other side will argue from a 2a perspective I just see it through a different lens. Already in Washington state the laws are being enforced differently if you live outside the city. You can already see the writing on the wall people of color will be hurt disproportionately by these proposed laws.

1. Disagree strongly. I'm not for searching homes, but I am for banning possession of

so-called Assault Weapons anywhere outside the home, banning importation or domestic production of such weapons, confiscation if found outside home, making it illegal to sell/transfer such weapons even if used, etc. Same for high capacity magazines, silencers, bump stocks, body armor, etc.

I'm also for mandatory mental evaluation for anyone found in possession of such. Also, want to see proper vetting of law enforcement personnel.

Enough.

I get what you are saying the major stumbling block is how to pay for it. You are talking about a couple trillion dollars when we can’t get money for healthcare. The courts have already said if you ban or confiscate the government has to pay unless you grandfather the ones already owned. There are approximately 280,000,000 semiautomatic guns in circulation.

How can leave something legal but lock them up when being transported? Laws don’t work that way.

8. Ban damn things, then. I'm against public toting too. Gun-humpers think their rights trump ours.

Are some of us really thinking about forgoing the 4th and 5th amendments in our zeal to impose a ban. Some of these posts are beyond authoritarian and cross over to a police state. Sadly it reminds me of in the quest for “security” in the wake of 9/11 we surrendered rights in the form of the Patriot Act.
