(3,559 posts)America truly is a mixed country.
Checking out your DNA has lots of surprises for some of us.
When POC take over, hopefully, well say - this Country is our Country, all of us. So, no reason to transfer control - just keep on being Americans. One family with many different branches in our tree.

(37,748 posts)And, before anyone reads something that's not there, "better the devil you know than the devil you don't know" is an idiom meaning that when faced with two options, it is better to choose the more familiar one, even if it is undesirable.
(and, before someone gripes that idiom means I'm making fun of someone's uncle: Idiom, (noun) a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g., rain cats and dogs, see the light ).

Most people never realize just how dehumanizing the over romanticization of other cultures can be. We're all messy, complicated and mostly tragically flawed.

(53,776 posts)country, meaning that whites will no longer be more than 50% of the population. We will all still have to deal with each other, hopefully in humane ways.
What's going on now is that trump and his white nationalist base know that this demographic shift is approaching and that's why all the insanity on the border as they try to keep brown people from applying for asylum. They see them as eventual Dem voters, which is where that racist "replacement" theory comes fromremember the chant of the nazis at Charlottesville"Jews will not replace us."?
And trump keeps the racist stuff coming with his denigration of Haiti and African countries. Now he's even moved on to American cities with his verbal attacks on Baltimore and Rep. Cummings.
Fasten your seat belts as the racists/white supremacists aren't going to give up what they see as their entitlement to be top dogs without a fight.

(4,316 posts)Although I hear there are classes there based on elitism, I think related to how Spanish you are, with Amerindians being at the bottom. They have horrible problems with corruption.
I wonder how many other countries who are not multicultural will ever evolve too, to not being nationalistic, like China, Japan, Russia.

(35,300 posts)And there are lots of data to get to an evidence-based answer.
The problem is, the evidence-based answer isn't the one acceptable answer.
One common solution is to gut the meaning of "culture." That's a dodge, for people who think that form is so much more important than substance.

(58,785 posts)But be careful what you wish for. No superior race means a whole mess of all-too-human people.
At least half are conservatives by nature and/or upbringing, with both all the flaws of the white ones and many, many scores to settle. Regardless of what liberal AAs and Hispanics would want, there's no reason to just assume their cons would react to power by allying with white liberals when they'd have so much more in common with the right.

(83,754 posts)The decades before the Civil War involved an argument between white people. Slaves werent given agency to determine their own fates. The situation is different now. We are a rainbow nation. And people of color arent waiting to be invited to the discussion. They are taking the reins and making sure their voices are heard. And many times what they say is painful to hear, especially if, as a white person, you consider yourself woke. Even though Im Latino, I know I have white privilege because of the color of my skin, and I take in everything, even when its painful.
But this is good. We are way past the days when the conversation was just among the members of the dominant group. The formerly voiceless are not keeping quiet. Whats happening now is proof that our country has changed, and irrevocably. The frightened attendees at Trumps rallies can rail and fulminate all they want, but they will have to adjust to a new reality, where people who dont look like them or worship like them demand their seat at the table. And they wont be able to stop the emerging majority.

(99 posts)Even as demographics shift, the money in this country will fight tooth and nail to concentrate as much power as possible for as long as they possibly can. That's what the Census kerfuffle was all about. It was merely one shot among an incoming barrage that we will be grappling with for at least the next three decades.
As the country transitions from white dominance to a more pluralistic political landscape, things will get uglier.
I reckon a lot of it won't settle down until 2050 or 60 or so. And even then, whoever is in power will still be human, and they will be susceptible to all the venality white politicians have ever been.
I always feel like it's a little patronizingly racist to believe people of color are somehow fonts of wisdom and won't have the same human failings. It plays a bit into the old racist Noble Savage trope. Not a particular fan of the train of thought. People are people. We must always be a check against those who seek and hold power, no matter their color.

(16,179 posts)and I am SO sick of them.
But if you look at the voting records of black women, they do seem a little wiser.
Bad apples are everywhere in every group (Clarence Thomas) But its my opinion that Barack Obama was possibly the finest president we ever had, certainly one of the top two or three, and that means POC are batting 100%... 😉 sample size of one.

And let's be honest. In this country, as it currently operates, black women have seen some shit.
