Obama: seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United

http://democracyisforpeople.org/

Something President Obama wrote during a public Q&A yesterday is major news:

“...I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United...”

You read that right.

The President of the United States has joined Public Citizen in recognizing the necessity of a constitutional amendment to prevent a hostile corporate takeover of our democracy.

Let’s make the most of this moment so that we don’t see our democracy sold off to giant corporations and business tycoons.

Sign our petition at DemocracyIsForPeople.org for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.

Then forward them this email to your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. And share DemocracyIsForPeople.org on Facebook, Twitter and wherever else you’re active.

This is a critical moment. Take the first step by signing the petition.

President Obama’s support of an amendment is getting a lot of coverage, including stories that also highlight Public Citizen’s role as a leader in the nationwide amendment movement.

In Mother Jones, Public Citizen’s Jonah Minkoff-Zern, one of our Democracy Is For People organizers, says, “We see every day ... the passion that people across the political spectrum have for a constitutional amendment to prevent the voices of the many from being drowned out by the money-fueled megaphone of the few.”

In Huffington Post, Lisa Gilbert, acting director of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division, says, “It’s meaningful that the president is taking note as he is forced to play the game under Citizens United.”

The president also called for “passing the DISCLOSE Act” and “legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists.” Nobody has been working harder than Public Citizen on these important policies.

David Bossie, head of Citizens United, the right-wing propaganda group for which the infamous ruling is named, offered this three-word response to the news of President Obama’s support for a constitutional amendment: “Bring it on.”

Let’s show him that we can bring it on.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Robert Weissman
President, Public Citizen

P.S. Another way you can help advance the amendment campaign is by making a contribution to help Public Citizen keep fighting runaway corporate power.
