In Illinois, the minimum legal barrel length for a shotgun is 18 1/4 inches.
You can saw off your shotgun's barrel to 18 1/4 inches and saw off the stock to leave only a pistol style grip and you still have a legal shotgun. Saw off an additional 1/4 inch and hou have an illegal sawed off shotgun. BUT,----
If you buy a brand new firearm that shoots 12 gauge shotgun shells, has a pistol grip and a 13 inch barrel, THAT, says the PTB, is NOT an illegal shotgun; it is a legal "pistol".
