I think most people feel they have sort of an investment in a candidate, once they give them their votes. Just as when they donate any amount of money, they are connected to that candidate. It is difficult to get them to ever change their minds and admit they made a mistake.
One time, that I can recall, I voted for someone back in 1990's that I would never vote for again. He was a native American. He was a Democrat. He had worked in the fields with fellow migrants. How could I not vote for him?
He was running against a very popular former Governor. He was a very good Democrat and had proven himself a leader in the Party. But, I thought the other guy was maybe just a little "more Democrat" and more "blue collar".
I even had a small fundraiser for him at my home. We were going to have a native American with some drums, but it didn't pan out.
My candidate won. Soon thereafter, he switched Parties. He became a Republican. I had been played for a sucker. People were asking for their contributions back. It was probably the worst vote I ever made?

(52,317 posts)He was running for Massachusetts governor against David silber, who, although a Democrat, seemed to be just to the right of atilla the hun.
As a person, I'd still say I'd rather have had weld in government than silber. Unfortunately, politics is a package deal. Along with weld we got a ton of other republicans, most of whom weren't remotely as socially liberal as weld, and all of whom were right-wing in terms of business and regulations.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd have held my nose and voted for silber and hoped that he would have surrounded himself with and appointed decent Democrats.

(23,364 posts)Though, when I voted for him in the primary (Mich Dem Primary 2008), he was not a named candidate, having dropped out when Michigan's delegates were deemed ineligible to vote at the convention. Anyway, I voted "uncommitted", meaning, in my mind, Edwards. Later that year, his reputation self-destructed.
It was a strange primary in Michigan.
Oh, yeah, I also voted for George Wallace in Michigan's 1972 Republican primary. I think the idea of messing with the Republican primary came from a newspaper. It seemed like a good idea, since I had no preference between two fine candidates for the Dem ticket.
