Ghislaine Maxwell was, according to her accusers, Jeffrey Epsteins protector and procurer, his girlfriend and his madam. She was, by all accounts, a soul mate and a mirror image. He grew up in Brooklyn with no money to speak of and never finished college. She is Paris-born, Oxford-educated, a jet-setter who partied with princes and billionaires.
Together, Epstein and Maxwell allegedly built what prosecutors, police and a growing number of women described as a sex-trafficking operation that crisscrossed the nation to provide Epstein with three young girls a day.
The death of Epstein, the convicted sex offender who authorities said hanged himself in a federal detention center cell in New York on Saturday, leaves those who seek to hold someone responsible for the alleged abuse of dozens of girls with one prime target: Maxwell.
According to many of the women who have spoken about what Epstein allegedly did to them, Maxwell was the financiers chief co-conspirator.
Maxwell, 57, has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing. According to people familiar with the investigation, authorities have had trouble locating Maxwell, who is believed to be living abroad. Her five-story Manhattan townhouse was sold in 2016 for $15 million by a company that used the address of Epsteins New York office.
Her lawyers told a judge in 2017 that she was in London, but had no fixed address. Lawyers representing Epsteins alleged victims said they wouldnt expect Maxwell to return to the United States anytime soon for fear of being arrested.

If we don't have an extradition treaty with Argentina, Buenos Aires would be a possibility.

(58,785 posts)not want to live in (2015 list I just grabbed):
Afghanistan, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Burma, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, the Central African Republic, Chad, Mainland China, Comoros, Congo (Kinshasa), Congo (Brazzaville), Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Macedonia, Madagascar, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Micronesia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé & Príncipe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vatican, Vietnam and Yemen.
I could find a lot of lovely and acceptably safe places to live from that list, but then my needs for social scenes, shopping, cultural activities, etcetera, are far more easily met. I don't think my life'd be blighted because Prince Andrew and crowd wouldn't fly in for house parties.
I've read that some advanced European nations we have treaties with, and other places more fitted to her lifestyle, won't extradite for some financial crimes but do for others, very much including sex crimes.

Also ... this list seems wrong. Micronesia is a US territory ... Guam is part of it ... just off the top of my head.

(58,785 posts)mountain towns (assuming they exist) escape year-round heat?
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Yes, most definitely.
What I do know it that it tends to be on the colder side, being mostly located relatively close to the Arctic Circle.
Well, for the time being anyway.
OTOH, it could rather conveniently become something of a 'climate paradise' in 20-30 years or so of continued fossil fuel extraction.

(44,974 posts)an extradition treaty with US and it's not bad for someone with a lot of money. It also has areas with warm climate, if one so desires.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)We weren't saying there's no warm climes there, but rather that one generally doesn't have to retreat to mountain towns to escape excessive heat in Russia ... unlike a lot of countries on the list of no-extradition countries.

(118,379 posts)the New York town house where she had lived was sold for $15 million. By 2017, her lawyers claimed before a judge that they did not know her address; they further claimed that she was in London but that they did not believe she had a permanent residence ...

The world is thirsty for revenge and you're it - unless you're already dead. That.wouldnt surprise me. You have FAR too much info on the world's richest douchebags. Yep, you're dead - either on your own or in custody.

(905 posts)with Maxwell said last night (either on MSNBC or CNN, don't remember which) that the most recent siting of Maxwell was on a plane to NYC and she had completely changed her physical appearance.
Certainly has enough money to undergo plastic surgery, buy new ID, throw on a Magat hat, and blend right in somewhere in the Midwest where most will never have even heard her name, let alone know what she previously looked like enough to correlate it to her current look. Just sayin'...not inconceivable to be hiding in plain sight right here in good ole 'Merica.

(6,916 posts)Scotland Yard and local cops. There is law enforcement in the UK, you know. They even identified the Russian spies who came in to poison Skripal.
Plus, we have this alliance called Five Eyes which monitors a lot of conversations in the UK. Im not sure if we pass info to the UK for purposes of their domestic law enforcement or for our federal law enforcement, but we certainly do so for spy cases. In either case, I think we can presume that UK police can find her if shes in London.

(101,391 posts)She was in London, 2 years ago. But people move around, and she has very good reason to. What the article is saying is not that she cannot be arrested, but that no-one is sure where she is now.

(8,083 posts)My guess is that she's in a country where they don't extradite (to the U.S. -as others have mentioned). However, I would think there would be a hit on her (obviously, she knows too much and she could probably be able to get some kind of a deal if she talks) so I wouldn't think she'd be able to casually roam around or really go anywhere. I'd say her life is pretty much going to be a nightmare and (if the allegations against her are correct) rightly so.
