What do you think immigration laws should be?

Specifically these two situations:

What should happen to someone who is attempting to enter the country at a port of entry?

What should happen to persons who are here already, undocumented, with no history of criminal activity?

is legal so therefore they should abide by it.

They should be able to apply by a pathway to citizenship. They are not animals they just want a better life.

What would happen if we were faced under the same circumstances and say for instance we want to emigrate to Canada would Canadian officials just let us return if we did not have history of criminal activity. There are procedures to acquire citizenship.

I wonder why this is so controversial? I know we can’t get the laws passed because of the racists GOP but I don’t understand why pathway is so controversial to the nation.

We should *want* people to come out "from the shadows" and become full citizens of this once and future great country.

6. Agree. People coming to POE and seeking asylum should get a hearing as required

by our current laws. People already here, for 2 or more years, employed, and paying taxes should have a path to citizenship.

2. First step is levy huge fines on those

who hire people not authorized to work here. Until that step is taken there will always be jobs for those not authorized to work here. People will continue to risk their lives to get here and once here will be at risk of being victimized to keep a job.

4. Yes, this is what will have the biggest effect on the issue.

It would however also make anyone undocumented unable to be employed.

Once people and their families become homeless and destitute, they would likely either turn to crime or self deport back to their place of origin.

Wouldn't think that is something that most progressives would support.

5. I'm all for having a way for them to

legally work here. Of course, then asshats like the guy in Mississippi would have to actually pay them.

7. Sort of light on specifics but some broad principles:

1. They should be humanely processed and a determination regarding granting entry, asylum, etc. should be made in the least amount of time possible under the most humane conditions (i.e. no family separations, decent facilities).
2. They should be encouraged/offered a path to citizenship (touting the benefits of citizenship) within a reasonable timeframe (much less than 10 years) and they should have the means to live and function in society- access to basic needs, governmental assistance, etc.

The *only* people whom I believe should be deported (and as soon as possible) IMHO should be people whom have committed violent offenses, are part of criminal gangs and organizations (i.e. human traffickers, MS-13).
