so that any course on a specific bearing is represented as a straight line. So you can draw a straight line between where you are and where you want to go and it gives you the compass heading you need to maintain to get there.

This will not be the shortest distance, but it will be the easiest to navigate, which was important back in 1569, when it was created.

In any case, the Mercator projection was not designed with any such considerations in mind. Nobody cared about that in 1569.

had nothing to do with a desire to misrepresent the size of Africa or to promote white supremacy or slavery. It was just a tool for navigation.

However well it works for navigation, it certainly isn't a good representation for teaching geography, for the reasons stated in the articles you linked to. While I am not current on the matter, the Wikipedia article I linked to states that it has fallen into disfavor for that purpose, which is as it should be.

Maybe they have adopted the Dymaxion Projection! That would be cool!

29. You are probably right that Geert de Kremer ("Gerardus Mercator") didn't have a racial agenda.

It just happened that his projection fit the mindset of those to whom Europe was the center of the Earth. So it became very popular for hundreds of years.

I like that Dymaxion projection. There's also a fairly reasonable compromise in the Hammer/Aitoff projections.
