"SNIP....
Business Insider: A Verdant Labs analysis of Federal Elections Commission data found that nearly three-quarters of truck drivers are Republican one of the most conservative jobs in America, along with surgeons and farmers. And truck drivers supported Trump in droves, according to an Overdrive magazine survey from 2016. About 75% said they planned to vote for Trump, up from 66% who supported Sen. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012.
But a sharp downturn in the trucking industry and a slew of tax changes have hampered their ability to make a living. And many connect those two trends to Trumps economic policies.

(113,057 posts)Probably closer to 5%, and has not gained any new voters.

(3,479 posts)IOW, he's underperforming his dismal approval ratings. He needs to overperform them by 5% (roughly 47% of the popular vote) and hope the EC saves his ass again. That's looking like a longshot at this point.

(14,564 posts)For him, was how much the conservative propaganda machine and liberal media slandered Hillary Clinton. What swung that election was people ginning themselves up to believe that the decent, highly competent public servant was the Antichrist.
We saw how they were able to turn Al Gore into some arrogant liar, John Kerry into a wimp, one of the biggest aspects of their ability to win elections is the Relentless capability having this country see a Democratic candidate in a bizarrely negative light.
We really can't know what this election is going to look like until our nominee is determined, and we see what they throw at him or her, and how much of it sticks.
The fact is is many Republicans or an office because people somehow think they're the Lesser evil, as there are Republicans who people vote for because they like or believe in them.

(25,855 posts)They voted for him. Just because they were too dumb themselves to understand he didn't give a flying fuck about them, doesn't make them any less responsible for their vote.
The real shame is that the rest of us also have to suffer.

(9,117 posts)We Democrats and progressives tried reason, talking about the issues, asking these people to think about their own interests, appealed to their higher natures, asked them to think of the future of our country, and they blew us off and voted for the scamster.
My sympathy is limited. I also believe that the only way some people wise up is if they hurt enough. I have no intention of standing in the way of their getting of wisdom.

(63,221 posts)until now, anyway - but why surgeons? I mean, they make a lot of money, but so do people in other professions and they don't all vote republican.
I have noticed that in the Boston area and suburbs that some of the wealthiest neighborhoods vote blue almost consistently. Maybe it's because there are so many people here who are also highly educated. Not sure what the reason is.

(81,240 posts)on those long lonely all-night drives at least before SiriusXM. Lots of small market mom n pop-owned radio stations got bought up by big media entities in the 90s and many of em got loaded up with a lot of rush limbaugh. And by now these listeners have been so brainwashed for so many years that its become a habit.
Just a guess. But they force-fed limbaugh to millions in rural areas and a lot of that turf got flipped to red. And at the same time, there was nothing as far as programming that was available at that scale to push the other way. NOTHING.
The damage has been done. Itll probably take YEARS to undo.

(14,490 posts)It's always been that way in my memory back to the early 60s.
One would think working people like truckers and farmers could get that through their thick heads.
This clearly demonstrates the power of right-wing talk radio.....
