American Airlines will pay $22.1 million fine for falsifying mail records

American Airlines has agreed to pay a $22 million fine for reporting false mail transfer times on U.S. Postal Service deliveries.

The U.S. Department of Justice said American Airlines reported incorrect times for when it transferred to foreign postal services or delivered mail.

"We expect companies doing business with the government to comply with their contractual obligations," said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Department of Justice's Civil Division.

The Justice Department said American was required to submit electronic scans of mail receptacles and note when the deliveries were made.
