(when they can)
I'll be relieved to hear from a number of people who seemed to be right under the hurricane/storm.

(24,721 posts)I'm at my mother's house right now on my iPhone; my house lost electrical power two nights ago & we're hopeful to get it back soon. I have no internet at home & I'm about to leave Mom's, so I won't be able to answer any replies from my house.
We had no damage but my son & his wife, who live in St. John Parish next to Lake Pontchartrain, got flooded with a couple of feet of water. Thank goodness they were staying at the in-laws' house the night of the storm. Whew. They're young & resilient & are taking it in stride; I'm just sick about it.
Thanks for thinking about us!
I hope to be back soon.

(268,993 posts)A few notable rainfall totals from Isaac, through 11 am EDT on Friday:
20.08" New Orleans, LA
15.02" Marion, MS
13.99" Pascagoula, MS
13.27" Hattiesburg, MS
10.85" Gulfport, MS
10.39" Slidell, LA
10.17" Biloxi, MS
9.85" Mobile, AL
7.38" Pine Bluff, AR
5.95" Baton Rouge, LA
A major reason for Isaac's heavy rainfall totals has been its very slow motion. This slow speed was due to the fact Isaac has been bumping into a ridge of high pressure that is unusually strong, due to the intense drought over the center of the U.S.; strong drought-amplified high pressure areas are very resistant to allowing any low pressure areas to intrude into their domain. The high pressure area was strong enough this week to allow several all-time records for heat this late in the year to be set:

You'll fix the porch in no time.
I dread the mosquitoes. They should be our state bird they are so big.

(268,993 posts)I wonder where SwampRat is this days!
I'm here a little east of New Orleans. We lost power for about a day, and had TONS of rain and wind. It certainly was nothing like Katrina, but it certainly wasn't a picnic, either.
A LOT of people in New Orleans won't be able to check in yet, because there are a lot of homes still underwater or badly flooded. When that happens, there's no power, so no internet.

(39,961 posts)If anyone needs help, I'm readily able to help be it physically or financially. I know how bad it was during Katrina. If there is a DUer that needs help finding a place to stay - which was horrible for us, too, - let's make a fund to find them a place.

This wasn't a mild one, by any means. The floods alone would be bad, but it just sat there blowing for about 9 1/2 hours. It wasn't Katrina, but this one is destructive because of how slow moving it was
I hope to find a way to get DUers that are desperate into safe places to stay if they don't have enough money, or even if they do.

EDIT: and I'm in trouble, too, because I don't have a 4x4 to get out of here
