Government is recommending that only essential services need to work today. and all non-essential services will be shut down by 10.00am. The island is shutting down at 10.00am because of feeder bands associated with Tropical Storm Dorian.bbThe Grantley Adams airport will be closed from noon.
All flights to and from Bim have been canceled. Two cruise ships have been rerouted and will stay in the Northern Caribbean. .
Dorian should be about 60mph as it crosses or comes very close to Bim. It is moving at 14mph.

Let's hope it is a Cat 5 by the time it reaches Mar-A-Lago, and blows the roof off, downs trees, and destroys that piece of garbage real estate Trump calls the Southern White House. Want to bet he has no insurance on that place, if he has bothered to pay the premiums.
One can only hope, for I have friends who live but a mile from that monstrosity. They bitch every time Trump is there because their movements are restricted due to tightened security.

Though by the way the state is shaped, it does stick out there like a sore thumb.

https://fortune.com/2016/10/24/donald-trump-hurricane-payout-mar-a-lago/
Trumps description of extensive damage does not match those of Mar-a-Lago members and even Trump loyalists. In an interview about the estates history, Trumps longtime former butler, Anthony Senecal, recalled no catastrophic damage. He said Hurricane Wilma, the last of a string of storms that barreled through in 2004 and 2005, flattened trees behind Mar-a-Lago, but the house itself only lost some roof tiles.
That house has never been seriously damaged, said Senecal, discussing Mar-a-Lagos luck with hurricanes. I was there for all of them.
Just over two weeks after Wilma, Trump hosted 370 guests at Mar-a-Lago for the wedding of his son Donald Jr.

(3,268 posts)Tropical storm Dorian is coming through the Caribbean islands hitting Barbados around noon. Of course I checked on the Virgin Islands where Maia is at school-it should pass thru there Wednesday with rain and winds only near 20mph. Looking at the weather map it shows temperatures no higher than 86 during the day and lows no lower than 78 for the next 15 days! This sounds very much like Paradise to me-I have to see what temperatures are like in the winter and whether I can afford to rent any hovel on the island...

(16,878 posts)Just as Hurricane season winds down. My SIL has a childhood friend from Minneapolis who has lived there for over 12 years now. Saw him last in 2010 when they honeymooned there.

(269,278 posts)The worst of Dorian will affect Bim and St Lucia overnight but the feeder bands will begin around noon which is why they are shutting down from 10.00am. I don't expect too much damage at 60mph moving at 14mph although storm surge could be a problem in coastal areas.
I just heard the news headlines in Bim - I laughed when David Ellis said US President 'Çon' claimed that China called. Everywhere people know this fucker is lying.

(269,278 posts)That is one flat ass island but you are correct about the North east being the highest part.
I love that it is called MOUNT Hillaby
https://www.barbadospocketguide.com/our-island-barbados/about-barbados/mount-hillaby.html
The peak of Mount Hillaby is the highest point on the Eastern Caribbean island nation of Barbados, in the parish of St. Andrew. It rests at a height of approximately 1.115 feet or 341m above sea level and immediately overlooks the Scotland District. Geologically it comprises of sandstone and chalk with a core of volcanic rock making it somewhat prone to soil erosion.

(42,770 posts)up...you had to take an elevator down to beach. But I guess it was more SE than due E. Anyway you look at it..risk of erosion and flooding
malaise
(269,278 posts)When they move quickly (and 14mph is moving at a good clip) there is less time for soaking the earth and causing erosion.
This is preparation for the big one.
