Peppered with complaints at a Minnesota event from farmers fed up with Trump's trade war, Agriculture Sec'y Sonny Perdue made a joke.
"What do you call two farmers in a basement?" Perdue asked. "A whine cellar." Boos ricocheted around the room, NYT says. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/27/us/politics/trump-farmers-china-trade.html

(81,656 posts)Hes a very strong supporter of free trade, said Craig Lesser, who worked for Mr. Perdue as Georgias commissioner of economic development.
But in the Trump administration, Mr. Perdue has been a staunch backer of the presidents policies, publicly defending tariffs, working to shrink the federal government and expressing doubts about the science behind climate change.
Hes the Trump whisperer, said Neill Herring, an environmental activist in Georgia who once worked with Mr. Perdue in the State Legislature. He can tell Trump exactly what he wants to hear.

(34,661 posts)The real story is,the Grain Farmers,if they are small operators, will get clobbered big time. The mega operators will have enough Equity to survive till Spring Planting. Watch for this to happen, the Folks who are Raising Cattle as well as Grain Farming are facing a major Shortage of Winter Hay because of the Unseasonable weather during this past growing season.
Just another clinker that is about to hit.
Notice the Farm Equipment Folks are nervous as all get out.

(29,234 posts)I should have invested in hay futures... there may be time yet to short cattle futures as a lot of cattle are headed to the slaughter house rather than ranchers pay for higher hay costs this winter... followed early next year by buying cattle futures as the resulting beef shortage happens.

(34,661 posts)Some of the Hay can be off set by cheap Corn and Beans as well as other Cereal Grains . Understand there is a lot of Beef and Pork as well as Chicken in Storage at this time in order to keep Retail Pricing up. All that will have to be moved out in the near future.
Interesting times ahead.
