Morning Consult Poll: Most popular Senators, Q2 2019

In each poll, Americans indicated whether they approve or disapprove of the job performance of their U.S. senators. For each question, they could answer strongly approve, somewhat approve, somewhat disapprove, strongly disapprove, or don’t know / no opinion.

1. That is misleading...

They cannot reasonably rank them by popularity when there are 50 different states. The popularity can only be reasonably compared using the same group of people in the poll. The best they could do would be the two Senators from a state, the governor and other officials elected state-wide, and maybe college coaches from the state.

2. This poll tracks their popularity among their constituents, not the country as a whole.

From the link in the OP:

This is why Senators from states with small, homogenous populations usually do best in this poll.

5. The qualifier "among their constituents" is what the ranking is about.

And yes, you can see that states with small, homegenous populations are at the top of the list, unsurprisingly. States with larger, more diverse populations are not going think alike as much.

There are others on DU who view this specific tracking poll as very, very important in determining who is actually "most popular" in the U.S. - I am not among them.

Approval ratings of constituents is valuable information in predicting the chances of incumbents who are running.

Most every S. Dakotan would say yeah, "I like him." Then ask why they would reply because he's MY Senator. But why? "I just told you!"

6. What's interesting is that many of the top ten are from relatively small states.....

...that are mostly Caucasian. It's very easy to be "popular" with a much smaller number of people, most of which are of similar demographics, in other words pleasing 600,000 mostly Caucasian residents is a LOT easier than pleasing 40 million residents of dozens of different demographics.

That makes Amy Klobuchar and Ed Markey as the most impressive of the top ten.

Population/State (millions)

5.6 MN
6.9 MA

1.3 ME
0.6 VT
1.3 NH
0.7 SD
0.9 ND
0.6 WY

in ANY big state whether CA or NY or TX etc.

So any patriotic Senator, i.e. Democrat, is going to have a large dislike factor.

I am glad people like their Senator and I hope one of ours wins...
