https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/459167-hugh-grant-lashes-out-at-boris-johnson-in-viral-tweetYou will not f--k with my childrens future. You will not destroy the freedoms my grandfather fought two world wars to defend. F--k off you over-promoted rubber bath toy. Britain is revolted by you and you [sic.] little gang of masturbatory prefects, Grant tweeted Wednesday.
Grant's tweet comes after Johnson sparked controversy by suspending Parliament for over a month to push through his plans for Brexit.
Johnson asked the queen to suspend Parliament, sending lawmakers home. Johnson said the move would give him the opportunity to present "a new legislative agenda" for the country with plans for a Queen's Speech in October. The speech, written by the majority party in Parliament, outlines the priorities and legislation for the ruling body, and is read by Queen Elizabeth.

(6,916 posts)Its the same struggle in the UK as here we are fighting for rule of law democracy against rightwing plutocrats, their propaganda media, and their puppet politicians. Like Johnson. And Trump.
The real problem are the rightwing billionaires.

(5,995 posts)The Russians refined their techniques during the Brexit campaign. Putin is all about breaking up the EU generally and NATO particularly.
Stalin made a deal with Hitler to stay out of the war that held until the Nazi's turned on them. Russia has always made common cause with totalitarians.

(6,857 posts)The other half is the deluded right wing voters. If the current regime were to disappear tomorrow, we would still have both halves to deal with.
I speak as an American, but I expect Britain has the same problem. C. S. Lewis noted that a person with an obsession is a person with little or no sales-resistance - he was at the time thinking of commerce, but the same applies to political ideas (if I can dignify right-wing talking points by calling them "ideas."

The reason uneducated white people vote for the billionaires is because of rightwing propaganda that the billionaires pay for.
The problem of our time is that plutocrats have figured out how to subvert democracy using money to fund propaganda.

(6,857 posts)But they sucker them in so thoroughly that the deprogramming hasn't been discovered to get them back to (or just to) sanity. If all the billionaires paid all the back taxes they legally and morally owe tomorrow, we'd still be stuck with the suckers.

I dont usually made political predictions, but if there is one reason David Cameron might lose the General Election, it is the above photoa picture taken in 1987 at Brasenose College, Oxford which Cameron attended. Although the Labour party accused him of being a member of a secret society, the Bullingdon Club, is far from a secret society. Immortalized as the Bollinger Club by Evelyn Waugh, the Buller usually make its presence known by throwing exclusive yet rambunctious parties.

(13,485 posts)Well, the days of being lightly entertained by royal pomp is over for me. The monarchy can go to hell for all I care. The end of the British monarchy can't come too soon if they support the British tRump.

(327 posts)"Constitutional monarchy differs from absolute monarchy (in which a monarch holds absolute power) in that constitutional monarchs are bound to exercise their powers and authorities within the limits prescribed within an established legal framework." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_monarchy
The Queen's Speech is formulated by the UK Govt. - the Queen reads it, to Parliament, on behalf of "Her Majesty's Government"
Constitutionally, she can have no input.
defacto7
(13,485 posts)I still see a difference between having input in government and having the human right to decline to speak of something she does not believe. If she is required to read something in public she disagrees with she's not free. It's like a prisoner of war who is forced to read a confession. Or... she does agree with it. Since she's not a prisoner under the gun I have to give the benifit of the doubt that if she says it or reads it then she means what she says. I don't have the ability to know by telepathy that what she says is not what she means.
However one looks at it, this is about credibility. Our words relay our intent unless we are not trustworthy.
Soph0571
(9,685 posts)She is a constitutional monarch - that means she gets to advise the PM of the day but the people elect her Parliament and she is bound to the decisions they make.

(9,685 posts)Great tweet.... but I can hear the echo through the land...Who the fuck is Hugh Grant? They have already ( as in the US ) poisoned the idea that people in the public space should have an opinion... Right wingers own the narrative in the UK right now nd High Grant is not going to change that by a linguistically marvellous tweet.
