I hate what our country has become.

Today I got a paper from a student saying the following:

I hate the government.

Buy more guns.
Then he wrote a smiley face.

Ran it by the Division Chair.
I told him my take on it was that he's a dumb kid and he thinks he's funny.
But, it's totally inappropriate and I'm not going to give him credit for completing the assignment.

Underlying the "joke" is an implied threat.
"If I'm not happy, I'm going to turn to violence."

When and how did a young person reach adulthood with the impression that this is an acceptable "joke" for an academic setting?
And, this kind of "joke" implies that any criticism will be met with potential violence.

There's no good way for me to address this without becoming the enemy and a target.

I hate this fucking country.

By someone who was at Virginia Tech, Parkland or any other school that suffered from a mass shooting.

Maybe he'd learn that this is not something to be joked about at all.

2. Do you think he will come to you and ask why no credit?

I wonder if his parents have influenced him. When I taught 6th grade all the kids mouthed whatever their parents said. I realized it when I would question them specifically about a comment or opinion and they had no argument what so ever, they were basically regurgitating what they heard at home.

4. I wrote an explanation on the paper, but I think I'm going to just tell him I need to speak

with him privately.

And then explain why what he wrote was inappropriate.

another teacher or an administrator join that discussion or at least be in the room in the back ground, unobtrusive. I know I had to do this to protect my own ass legally, since they often lie and you need "evidence/documentation" just in case. I learned that this was "insurance" when dealing with certain issues. The union also recommended it.

and you trust ask him/her to be doing something in your room while you speak with the student. Pretend he needs to be helping you out fixing your computer or some tech stuff quietly to the side, just in case.

Every teacher I knew told their own children and their ROP high school student helpers who were planning or contemplating going into teaching not to. So did I. None of them ever listened and then regretted it.

No respect or support from admin or parents. Low pay, teaching to the test, testing testing testing, sick all the time, 10 hour days, no time to even go to the bathroom, bureaucratic BS, etc. Elementary school is like this anyway, especially the lowest grades. When I left for a year and went to Europe the teachers from Germany, France and Australia said it was the same in their countries. I have heard from parents in the US who moved from India, Vietnam, and Korea that teachers over there are paid and respected like doctors and lawyers are here. Sounds good to me.

Low pay, horrible working conditions, and a huge target on your back.
Everyone hates you: students, parents, administrators....teachers are lazy, greedy, and corrupting their students! Oh, yeah, and they are elite eggheads as well!

Most sad? My grammar Nazi retired.

Anyway, teaching is a calling. I hate that you feel the need to caution people like that.

And I agree, our nation has lost itself, though I think we've always been teetering on the edge in many ways.
