A vegan woman sued her neighbors for barbecuing in their backyard: 'It's deliberate'

A vegan woman has filed a suit against her neighbors in the Australian supreme court after complaining about the smell of meat and fish emanating from their barbecues.

Cilla Carden took her case to the Supreme Court of Western Australia, citing her neighbors' barbecuing, smoking and children playing basketball, among other complaints, reported Australia's Nine.

Carden accused her neighbors of intentionally setting up these nuisances.

"It's deliberate," she told Nine. "All I can smell is fish. I can't enjoy my backyard."

Substitute the word Ford or Chevy for vegan and you have the same type of inference but it would not get to you.

I am a vegetarian and when ever people offer me meat to eat I say no thanks I am a vegetarian. Immediately there is tension and I did not put it there.

Then someone thinks I am preaching or something when I never tell people how to eat.

As I have grown older, I am more sensitive to glutens (make me feel like I have a spot of bad indigestion). My case is mild compared to others, I have solved my issue by putting nutritional yeast into things like spaghetti sauce and homemade bread, that seems to help me a lot. I also drink more water than I used to.

Unless the food isn't processed at all, you can't tell very well by looking. For example, a steak might have been marinated with soy sauce.

I can say no to anything that obviously has gluten in it, but the problem is with all the non-gluten foods that are prepared with gluten.

Tue Sep 3, 2019, 04:15 PM
Sep 2019

My family members and close friends know how to prepare food for me now, and there are even restaurants around here that understand. (In one case the chef's wife is Celiac.)

When I travel I go to restaurants (not food courts) and am careful about what I order and how I explain it. Sometimes a chef will even come out and talk to me, and sometimes I just tell him or her my issue, and ask for suggestions. I've even had chefs prepare something delicious that's not on the menu because I gave them free rein to make whatever they wanted -- as long as it had no gluten.

But if we're staying in a place for a while, we rent a condo with a kitchen rather than stay in a hotel.

When someone says they are Vegan, my response is more 'Oh dear' because that's a dicey accommodation. My nephew and his wife are Vegan and I've given up on trying to get things right. Even if I have all of the right ingredients, they never meet their 'high standards'. They finally decided to start bringing their own food, which was fine, but now they are refusing to even sit at the table, with us evil omnivores.

Some Mexican restaurants use chicken broth or put beaf in their red sauce.

So I ask the waiter if that is the case where we are.

If they do I don’t eat while others do. That upsets them but I didn’t cause it.

It is a silly thing to get upset about.

People should get use to people not eating meat or dairy. The numbers of them is increasing.

However my nephew and his wife don't trust that so they will only eat at strict vegan establishments. I've gone out to eat, with them, but I find the fare to be VERY overpriced and not particularly satisfying.

Life was much easier when they were vegetarian. And not just because of the food. It's like dealing with religious cult members and the lectures and sanctimonious attitudes get really old, really fast. I've had to draw a line, more than once. I realize not all vegans are like that, but that's been my family experience.

100. Rightwing evangelicals. Frankly I view them as some of the most evil forces on earth.

None of what they stand for is good.

There are some borderline cases:

The Salvation Army does a lot of good feeding and housing people that really have no where to go. They seem to somehow be Affliated with Goodwill, an organization which helps really poor people by offering donated goods for cheap resale. But the Salvation Army has an outdated sexual orientation view, although I have never heard of them turning away a needy person because of sexual orientation, at least not the local one.

People don't realize that the YMCA/YWCA are religious organizations, though that should be clear by pronouncing the full names. I used to have a membership for when I was in a big city. Their administrators seem to be religious. But I have not seen cases where I could say that I noticed discrimination, they seem to serve whoever come to their facilities.

The groups with the mega-churches and leaders that have mansions and private jets, or the ones that are commenting on and attacking the rights of other members of society, are the ones that I look sideways at, and their number among evangelicals seem to be growing, not shrinking as it should be.

The ones that throw blood on people and try to shut people down are just garden variety assholes and would likely be that if they ate animal products.

we evaluate every person that we deal with before making broad-brushed claims. I really don't prefer to deal with republicans, but I have met many that were ok if politics were not discussed, do I approve of how they vote? Hell no! But there are common interest things that I will work with them on.

Our neighbors, who rent part of the house next door, like to sit outside and play cards with their friends for hours on end. They can be pretty noisy, but that's not a major problem. They also like to smoke cigars, which means on a nice summer's day, we have to have our house shut tight or have our house smell like cigar smoke. We've lived in our house for more than 30 years. I guess we should just move?

I don't know what it is about our neighborhood, but people all around our house seem determined to foul the air, especially on nice days when it would be great to open up the house and let the fresh breeze pass through.

Buy two big assed industrial fans, run extension cords to them, turn them on and point them at your neighbors. Make sure they are firmly on your property. If they ask what's up, tell them that you are allergic to tobacco smoke but don't want to ask them to stop smoking.

I wonder how barbecue smoke compares to secondhand tobacco smoke, both in its chemical makeup and its effects on the human body.

they must also keep their children indoors 24/7 so that they don't bother her, quit smoking, and otherwise curtail their activities to suit her.

Maybe she should move if she hates everything about the neighborhood.

Reminds me of some people who sued (years ago now) because they moved into a neighborhood of 3 and 4 bedroom homes and were utterly shocked that children exist and play in backyards!

We were lucky because we lived across the street and a few houses over, but she made those other people's lives a misery. Not vegan, just a nutty control freak in her own right.
