I watched "Dirty Hairy", "Paint Your Wagon" and many Eastwood films with my father...

And I must say that I feel nothing but sadness over Mr Eastwood's speech. My dad pretty much stuck to John Wayne movies, Clint Eastwood flicks and any chance he got to throw his boys in the car and head to the drive-in he took.

I was real young when I heard the theme from "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" from the gigantic backseat of a four door Plymouth Satellite but I remember it to this day. Mr Eastwood was so silent and tough as he walked down those dusty streets. Nothing but jingling of his spurs. That amazing song that set the tone so well.

My father was embarrassed to sing until he got the 8-track to "Paint Your Wagon". Mr Eastwood was a pretty crap singer and for some reason that gave my father the courage to sing outloud. We had long car trips where that tape would get played four or five times. Ends up my dad had this beautiful silky baritone that would lull me off to sleep in the backseat as we drove across the states. "A way out here they've got a name for rain, and wind, and fire...." My dad died kinda young so my memories of him are small but very cherished. I never would have heard my father sing if Clint Eastwood hadn't shown him the way.

So, I've always loved me some Clint Eastwood. He is a part of fond and cherished memories. He has always left me feeling nothing but love and sunshine.

So, it is painful to see all of this go down. He is a grown-up and he chose to use his fame to push a weak and dishonest candidate but tearing up an American Icon feels terrible. I get no pleasure knowing that his ramblings have damaged Mitt Romney. I am glad we aren't talking about anything Romney said today.

But I'm just real sorry about the whole damned thing, you know?

Watching the on-air talking heads say things like "cringe-inducing" (Andrea Mitchell, wife of the ancient Greenspan) is very sad, and seeing Clint's hair mussed up like an old, old man while he rambled on was also sad. I only caught the clips, because if I had watched the whole GOP show I'd still be heaving. My thought: What were they thinking?

HOWEVER, the response online has been nothing short of hilarious. Without disrespecting Clint Eastwood, for the most part, the wit just keeps on coming. The White House says they will refer all questions about the Eastwood speech to Salvador Dali! At DU I read this: "Ceci n'st pas une chaise, with apologies to Magritte." And last night there were posts of both a Dali painting of chairs and the cartoon of a news article about Grandpa Simpson titled "Old Man Yells at Chair." I have to admit I about fell off my own chair laughing at some of those.

So take it all in stride. Laugh at the GOP, and hope for a more graceful exit line to Clint's career than this exhibition.

As I walked out on the streets of Laredo,
As I walked out in Laredo one day,
I spied a young cowboy all wrapped in white linen
Wrapped in white linen as cold as the clay.

I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy;
I see by your outfit you are a cowboy, too;
We see by our outfits that we are both cowboys.
If you get an outfit, you can be a cowboy, too.

A party convention is the single most "managed" public event in American politics. There's no excuse for letting a public figure and respected artist like Clint Eastwood on-stage without vetting his presentation. Were they so overwhelmed by his power and charrisma that they were afraid to say "show me" before putting him on national TV for a 12 minute ad lib? That's just crappy management.

My best guess is that the grown ups in the Republican Party have already decided to sit this one out.

Spelling...sorry I have to tell you, it is supposed to be "Dirty Harry"

Clint Eastwood has been in several GREAT movies! And I agree it was unnecessary and disappointing for him to appear at the RNC.
As far as I am concerned, it was a wash for him. Most importantly, it was a big soggy wet blanket for the convention.

This is all smoke and mirrors to divert attention from Mr. Empty Suit.

Especially when the other party is throwing seniors to the wolves.

And you're not alone. I still love Eastwood, as well as 'Frasier,' and Patricia Heaton in 'The Middle.' I'll join in the mockery of Eastwood's performance last night, but that won't stop me from seeing a film of his if I'm interested in it.

...California beach community for several years. He has been registered as a Republican since the early 1950s and never made a secret of it. He supported Eisenhower and Nixon, though he has been critical of US military action pretty consistently.

He's always been OK on environmental issues, pro-choice on abortion, and in general the model of an old-fashioned moderate California Republican.
