... Because catfish do their business in murky river waters, the noodler is never quite sure where his catch is hiding out. That means snapping turtles, carp or scale fish could be waiting. Being bitten or running up against one of those feistier brands has its own dangers. Like losing a finger. Or puncture wounds. But don’t tell that to Republican vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan, he already knows. Mitt Romney’s running mate loves noodling.

“We walk around the [river] banks looking for [a] hole,” Ryan told the New York Times a few months ago. “You get your hand inside the fish and they kind of, they come up on your hand. Then you just squeeze wherever you are on that fish and pull it out.

“I know it sounds crazy, but it’s really exhilarating,” he said.

After revieweing the WIDNR fishing regs the only fish that are legal to be caught by hand in Wisconsin are various species of minnows, suckers, carp, goldfish, redhorse, freshwater drum, burbot, bowfin, gar, buffalo, lamprey, alewife, gizzard shad, smelt, mooneye, and carpsuckers.

I thought that was more of a Southern thing. However if Ryan likes noodling for bowfin That sonofabitch must use kevlar gloves...
