Bad news for this 18th anniversary of 9/11: We forgot.

We forgot the lessons of 9/11: Osama bin Laden would love Trump

In electing Donald Trump, we gave Osama exactly what he wanted, by exposing the U.S. as a hapless paper tiger

..............

The terrorist leader wanted the world to see the U.S. the way he saw it: Mean, hateful, small-minded and cruel. Well, as George W. Bush liked to say, mission accomplished.

..............................

Electing Trump did what bin Laden only dared dream accomplish: Framing the U.S. as a bunch of small-minded, petty bigots.

........................

Trump has been successful at imposing a hateful, alienating, authoritarian politics on our nation, in a fashion that's likely beyond Osama bin Laden's wildest dreams of destroying America. Let's hope it's not too late to claw back this horrific turn of events and avoid what we swore we'd never do: Let the terrorists win.

Nothing against remembering and memorials to the victims...

But the incessant videos of planes flying into WTC 1 and 2 where you KNOW people just died by the hundreds right then is trauma over and over again.

We don't really have that sort of visceral reminder of other national tragedies... Pearl Harbor, the Titanic, Gettysburg, etc.

It was traumatic, and yes, we have constant reminders of Pearl Harbor, the Kennedy Assassination. Titanic and Gettysburg.

As an historian, data points of remembrance are important as those who forget history will be doomed to repeat it.

That 80% of America favored invading Iraq in retribution for 9/11.

I didn't forget that we continued to shoot ourselves in the foot, even after Obama was elected. Gitmo is still open, we're still helping SA carry out the destruction of Yemen and perpetuating the Sunni/Shia War, we've backtracked on the Cairo Speech that inspired revolutions across the Arab World, & we haven't come up with a alternative strategy to drone strikes: buy good will around the world (hint: clean water and sewage treatment).

We didn't forget; we never learned the lesson.
