California lawmakers vote to undo NCAA amateur athletics

This is long overdue. Revenue generating college sports have been corrupt for too long. Young athletes have an absolute right to be paid for their likeness.

The coaches are getting paid millions, the schools are making millions, the TV networks and the NCAA are making billions, but the athletes aren't sharing in the profits they create. And don't give me any guff about the value of their scholarships, in too many cases these kids are getting joke degrees if they graduate at all. A recent NFL draftee scored illiterate on an intelligence test after spending 3 years at a prestigious college where he was named All Conference academically, the academic programs many of these athletes are forced into are doing them no favors. And even if many of them were in "real" majors they wouldn't thrive there as many big time athletes don't have the academic background to compete with regular students at the schools they attend.

This could lead to huge changes in college sports.

3. Not understanding how the California legislature can dictate what NCAA rules are.

Maybe they should pass a law requiring the NCAA to award all California teams 9 points for a touchdown

While the law states the NCAA and schools cannot punish athletes who take salaries, it doesn't say anything about the NCAA penalizing schools. Have a player that is accepting $$$; make the school ineligible for any post season play or bowl games.
